Stanley Kwan gehört mit Wong Kar-Wai zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der sogenannten Second Wave im Hongkong-Kino, einer Strömung, die sich im Zuge der Übergabe der Kronkolonie an die Volksrepublik China filmisch mit dem Übergang beschäftigte. Die prekären Verhältnisse in den 1990er Jahren verarbeitet Kwan sowohl in historischen Filmen als auch in bewegenden Melodramen. Da Kwans Eltern nach Hongkong emigriert waren, spielen Exil und Heimat in seinen Filmen eine große Rolle. Kwans Debütfilm NU REN XIN (WOMEN, 1985) machte ihn in Hongkong berühmt, mit YANZHI KOU (ROUGE, 1988) gelang ihm drei Jahre später der internationale Durchbruch. Kwan bekannte sich in seinem Dokumentarfilm über die chinesische Filmgeschichte zu seiner Homosexualität und gewann mit YUE KUAI LE, YUE DUO LUO (HOLD YOU TIGHT, 1998) den Teddy-Award auf der Berlinale.

Noch im Italien Mussolinis drehte Luchino Visconti mit seinem Erstling "Ossessione" ("Besessenheit", 1943) den Initialfilm des italienischen Neorealismus, zu dessen Haupt- und Meisterwerken auch "La terra trema" ("Die Erde bebt", 1948) und "Rocco e i suoi fratelli" ("Rocco und seine Brüder", 1960) zählen. Zeigen diese Visconti eher von seiner politisch engagierten, kämpferischen Seite, so präsentiert sich der seit jeher einem detailversessenen Realismus verpflichtete Regisseur mit "Senso" ("Sehnsucht", 1954) und "Il gattopardo2 ("Der Leopard", 1963) sowie der Thomas-Mann-Adaption "Morte a Venezia" ("Tod in Venedig", 1971) und "Ludwig" ("Ludwig II.", 1973), dem Biopic über Bayerns ›Märchenkönig‹, als Meister mondän-dekadenter Untergangsszenarien.

This book explores mobilities as a key to understanding the practices that both frame and generate contemporary everyday life in the urban context.
