Ganz fundamentale Themen wie das der Schuld werden so neu verhandelt, beispielsweise in "Wolfsburg" (2003). Petzold ist ein Filmemacher, der sensibel für Geschlechterrollen ist und der es vermag, Stereotype und Haltungen aufzubrechen, ohne zu provozieren. Die sechs Beiträge des Bandes widmen sich den bislang weniger erforschten Filmen und Themen, wie dem Einsatz der Musik, und folgen in exemplarischen Detailanalysen den Spuren der Filmgeschichte in seinen Arbeiten.

Das freundliche, fast liebevolle Bild von Menschen, die einen zähen Kampf mit Erwartungen und Normen des gesellschaftlichen Daseins führen – häufig wenig erfolgreich, überfordert und mit ungeeigneten, fragwürdigen Mitteln –, charakterisiert die Filme von Andreas Dresen (*1963). So grotesk Situationen dort erscheinen mögen, die Handelnden werden nie zu Zombies, sie laden in einen vielschichtigen subjektiven Raum der Teilhabe ein. So ist es bei "Gundermann" (2018), der teils in der DDR spielt, und auch in "Halbe Treppe" (2002) oder "Willenbrock" (2005), die von der prekären Nachwendeperiode erzählen, aber auch in "Nachtgestalten" (1999), "Sommer vorm Balkon" (2005) oder "Wolke 9" (2008), für die dieser Hintergrund weniger bestimmend ist. Häufig ist von einer dokumentarischen Anmutung die Rede. Stimmig gewählte Orte und Ausstattungen, Improvisationen beim Drehen oder auch Einsätze der Handkamera stützen den Eindruck. Sie suggerieren Nichtinszenierung, obschon es Mittel einer durchdachten Inszenierung sind, die beim Schnitt ihren endgültigen Rhythmus findet und Verstand wie Emotion bewegt. Solchen Aspekten des Kinos von Andreas Dresen widmet sich der Band.

Since the early days of film, critics and theorists have contested the value of formula, cliché, conventional imagery, and recurring narrative patterns of reduced complexity in cinema. Whether it's the high-noon showdown or the last-minute rescue, a lonely woman standing in the window or two lovers saying goodbye in the rain, many films rely on scenes of stereotype, and audiences have come to expect them. Outlining a comprehensive theory of film stereotype, a device as functionally important as it is problematic to a film's narrative, Jörg Schweinitz constructs a fascinating though overlooked critical history from the 1920s to today. Drawing on theories of stereotype in linguistics, literary analysis, art history, and psychology, Schweinitz identifies the major facets of film stereotype and articulates the positions of theorists in response to the challenges posed by stereotype. He reviews the writing of Susan Sontag, Roland Barthes, Theodor W. Adorno, Rudolf Arnheim, Robert Musil, Béla Balázs, Hugo Münsterberg, and Edgar Morin, and he revives the work of less-prominent writers, such as René Fülöp-Miller and Gilbert Cohen-Séat, tracing the evolution of the discourse into a postmodern celebration of the device. Through detailed readings of specific films, Schweinitz also maps the development of models for adapting and reflecting stereotype, from early irony (Alexander Granowski) and conscious rejection (Robert Rossellini) to critical deconstruction (Robert Altman in the 1970s) and celebratory transfiguration (Sergio Leone and the Coen brothers). Non-literal language is ubiquitous in everyday life, and while hyperbole is a major part of this, it has so far remained relatively unexplored. This volume provides the first investigation of hyperbole in English, drawing on data from genres such as spoken conversation, TV, newspapers, and literary works from Chaucer to Monty Python. Combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, it uses approaches from semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis and classical rhetoric to investigate in detail both speaker-centered and emotive aspects of hyperbole, and also addressee-related aspects, such as interpretation and interactional uptake. Illustrated with a range of diachronic case studies, hyperbole is also shown to be a main means of linguistic creativity, and an important contributor to language change. The Death of Classical Cinema uncovers the extremely rich yet insufficiently explored dialogue between classical and modernist cinema, examining the work of three classical filmmakers—Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, and Vincente Minnelli—and the films they made during the decline of the traditional Hollywood studio system. Faced with the significant challenges posed by alternative art cinema and modernist filmmaking practices in the early 1960s, these directors responded with films that were self-conscious attempts at keeping pace with the developments in film modernism. These films—Lang's The Thousand Eyes of Dr. Mabuse, Hitchcock's Marnie, and Minnelli's Two Weeks in Another Town—were widely regarded as failures at the time and bolstered critics' claims concerning the irrelevance of their directors in relation to contemporary filmmaking. However, author Joe McElhaney sheds new light on these films by situating them in relation to such acclaimed modernist works of the period as Godard's Contempt, Fellini's La dolce vita, Antonioni's Red Desert, and Resnais's Last Year at Marienbad. He finds that these modernist films, rather than being diametrically opposed in form to the work of Hitchcock, Lang, and Minnelli, are in fact profoundly linked to them.
