La Legatio ad Caium, pur non essendo identificabile come un saggio “storico” ha, insieme all’In Flaccum, una sua singolarità nel complesso dei trattati composti da Filone di Alessandria. La narrazione è incentrata sugli avvenimenti drammatici inerenti alla persecuzione degli Ebrei in Alessandria negli anni 38-40 d. C. Si potrebbe parlare di testimonianza di una situazione di “crisi”, usando un termine che attualmente ha assunto significati polivalenti e che è peraltro attestato dagli studiosi come definizione delle problematiche circostanze in cui versarono gli Ebrei? Quali valenze individua in primis il lemma krisis nel lessico filoniano? La “crisi” implica il manifestarsi di una krisis esistenziale e storica di cui Filone esprime nella Legatio una chiara consapevolezza?

La produzione letteraria filoniana nasce all’incrocio di Alessandria, Roma e Gerusalemme, dove quest’ultima rappresenta la “patria ideale” in cui non è possibile stabilire con certezza se Filone andò mai e che appare nei suoi scritti soprattutto sotto forma allegorica. All’incrocio tra mondi distinti, Filone compie un’opera di mediazione ed integrazione culturale senza precedenti, al cui interno la politica gioca un ruolo fondamentale. Giuseppe, la cui azione è ispirata da Dio, rappresenta la figura del politico ideale, in cui teologia e filosofia convergono. Con la sua presentazione di Giuseppe come “uomo politico”, indirizzata a un pubblico greco-romano, Filone “attualizza” un personaggio biblico, presentandolo in modo tale che un cittadino dell’Impero, potenziale destinatario dell’opera, potesse facilmente metterlo in relazione con gli esempi politici del tempo. La strategia di Filone sollecita una nuova attenzione verso Giuseppe, stimolando anche chi non aveva familiarità con la tradizione ebraica e lanciando un messaggio che tutt’oggi – a ventuno secoli di distanza – resta straordinariamente attuale. Grazie a questa riproposta della traduzione e dell’introduzione al De Josepho di Clara Kraus Reggiani, fortemente voluta dall’Editore Guaraldi, è possibile di nuovo leggere questa importante opera filoniana. L’“omaggio” alla grande studiosa, che oggi sarebbe poco più che centenaria, mette in luce il suo merito di aver tradotto per la prima volta questo testo in italiano, dopo la prima versione in volgare del 1575 a cura del canonico di Verona Pierfrancesco Zino.
