Dopo decenni di attestati di morte o di condanne senza appello, l’utopia sembra dare timidi segnali di ripresa. Dopo la decretata fine dei grandi progetti e delle grandi narrazioni, pare ci si accorga lentamente che non si può vivere senza progettare e anticipare qualcosa del futuro. Tuttavia ben raramente si sottolinea la centralità dell’utopico. E quasi mai si ricorda il filosofo, Ernst Bloch, che proprio un secolo fa ha ripreso e rilanciato il tema “utopia” in tutta la sua pregnanza umana e cosmica assumendolo nel titolo della sua prima grande opera: Spirito dell’utopia (1918). Eppure senza questo “spirito” vasto e profondo anche il rilancio dell’apertura progettuale può avere solo un respiro corto e labile. Per questo è indispensabile richiamare l’attenzione su questo autore, che riporta l’utopico alle sue radici, alle sue motivazioni e ai suoi snodi di fondo. Il libro si concentra appunto sul nucleo filosofico del suo poliedrico pensiero, ampiamente orchestrato nel monumentale capolavoro Il principio speranza(Mimesis 2019). I capitoli alternano presentazioni di carattere introduttivo e studi di approfondimento delle tematiche individuate come centrali (utopia-speranza, ontologia-logica), a cui affiancano esempi del confronto di Bloch con altri pensatori: un autore contemporaneo (Heidegger) e autori del passato (Gioacchino da Fiore e Agostino). Il filo conduttore è il compito di ripensare l’utopico nel suo senso radicale di spirito e di principio che informa tanto il vivere dell’uomo quanto l’essere del mondo.

Il testo dedicato alle Differenziazioni sul concetto di progresso, che qui presentiamo in una nuova traduzione italiana, rappresenta un’efficace sintesi della filosofia politica di Ernst Bloch. Nella galleria del marxismo del Novecento, da troppo tempo si riserva a Bloch l’etichetta del più eretico tra gli eterodossi, fino a fare dell’attraversamento blochiano del marxismo una sorta di inessenziale accidente. Eppure, Bloch, sempre assai critico nei confronti di un certo marxismo di Stato, non ha mai cessato di riprendere e svolgere nel presente i punti fondamentali del pensiero di Karl Marx. Perciò la cifra specifica del suo marxismo è questione centrale per ogni interprete che intenda valorizzare una riattivazione attuale del pensiero di Marx. Nello specifico, questo saggio sul concetto di progresso, soprattutto attraverso la formulazione del concetto di un multiversum temporale e spaziale atto a valorizzare le culture extraeuropee, permette di connettere i dibattiti sul multiculturalismo e l’interculturalismo, così come la critica postcoloniale e decoloniale delle ideologie eurocentriche o neorazziste, alla filosofia politica di Bloch e quindi alla necessità di pensare, con Marx, le possibilità di trasformazione del nostro presente. In appendice un saggio di Vittorio Morfino sulla temporalità in Marx e nella tradizione marxista e la ristampa anastatica della prima edizione tedesca del testo di Bloch.

Uno dei maggiori problemi irrisolti che Karl Marx ha lasciato in eredità ai suoi interpreti riguarda la legittimità della speranza in sede pratica e teoretica, tanto nella cornice del suo pensiero quanto nel più ampio orizzonte della filosofia. L’intera opera marxiana sembra enigmaticamente in bilico tra le opposte dimensioni della scienza e della speranza. La linea interpretativa adottata da Ernst Bloch e da Karl Löwith scorge in Marx il filosofo della speranza più che della scienza, riconoscendo nella sua riflessione un’ineludibile tensione utopica rispetto alla quale la scienza sarebbe un fenomeno secondario e funzionale. Entrambi sostengono la centralità del momento della speranza in Marx, ma in forza delle concezioni antitetiche di questo sentimento che essi fanno valere all’interno della propria riflessione filosofica, finiscono poi per valutarlo in maniera opposta.

Sebbene gli studi critici italiani intorno al pensiero di Ernst Bloch, soprattutto negli ultimi anni, si siano espressi con un particolare vigore, mancava ancora una ricostruzione teorica e storica adeguata della filosofia della musica in Geist der Utopie, che tenga conto da un lato della concezione primigenia dell’utopia, quale si presenta in questa stessa opera, e dall’altro lato della ricca ed elaborata costellazione di figure, nelle quali si sviluppa proprio il concetto di utopia, che deve gran parte della sua ispirazione e genesi teoretica alle riflessioni su tematiche filosofico-musicali. Si tratta, allora, cominciando da Geist der Utopie, di rintracciare i concetti chiave della filosofia della musica in tutta l’opera di Bloch.

Detention camps exceed the juridical concept of punishment and crime. This book comprises two parts: 1. a collected volume that discusses camps not as something of the past, but as a paradigmatic political space in which ordinary law is completely suspended, and 2. an Italian-English parallel text of the war diary of an Italian prisoner during his confinement at the Stalag X-B internment camp near Sandbostel from 1943–1945. 1. The Human Condition of Exception: Collected Essays Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace Written in Italian and English, the essays collected in this volume explore the issue of camps and suffering from various perspectives, including philosophical inquiry, literary analysis, historical description and legal assessment. As Agamben suggests, the camp embodies the state of exception. A dehumanising camp life will therefore emerge every time such a structure is created. What happens in camps exceeds the juridical concept of punishment, as well as that of crime. Prisoners are faced with a ‘useless’ pain (Levinas) as it is not the expiation of a fault. Prisoners attempt to describe their extreme suffering through their diaries. Their experience, however, cannot be entirely communicated. Even their screams, which express humanity at the extreme limit of its un-power, are silenced. Given the recent popularity of right-wing politics, as well as the centenary of Mussolini’s march on Rome, such research is more urgent than ever. The book will appeal to readers with an interest in philosophy as well as Irish history scholars studying internment during Partition and The Troubles in Northern Ireland. 2. Aldo Quarisa’s Diary: An Italian-English Edition Edited by Aisling Reid and Valentina Surace. Transcribed and with a preface by Galileo Sartor. Translation of the diary by Aisling Reid (Italian-English). In 1943, Aldo Quarisa worked at a military school in Florence, where he taught literature. In October of that year, one month after Italy had surrendered to the Allied forces, the Italians declared war on the Germans. In Florence, the German occupiers responded quickly, by arresting and deporting people with military connections to numerous concentration camps in Austria. Quite suddenly, Aldo was detained and deported through a network of camps, including Benjaminovo and the Stalag X-B internment camp, near the Austrian village of Sandbostel. For two years, he found himself imprisoned alongside other Italians, including the celebrated journalist Giovannino Guareschi, who secretly kept a diary that was later published as his Diario Clandestino 1943–1945 in 1946. Much like Guareschi, Aldo also kept a diary and excerpts are published here in both Italian and English for the first time. The diary describes in unprecedented detail the monotony of camp life, the cruelty of the guards and the prisoners’ struggle to survive. The text is an important document that preserves the memory and voices of all those who suffered during the war and will inevitably be of interest to readers with an interest in World War II.
