Salvi Turró reprèn en aquest llibre un debat tan candent com el de la postmodernitat i la Modernitat, a partir dels elements històrics i conceptuals que determinen l’evolució filosòfica del segle XVII al XIX. L’objectiu de Filosofia i Modernitat és precisament posar en relleu la necessitat d’enfocar la problemàtica filosòfica des de l’esforç per «orientar-se en el món», més enllà dels tòpics escolars sobre si uns pensadors són antics o moderns, moderns o postmoderns. El volum revisa el sentit de la filosofia moderna i de la noció mateixa de «modernitat» reconstruint tant el sentit general com el desplegament i la periodització de la Modernitat com a «època filosòfica» i recuperant els intents de reconstruir «l’ordre del món» en el pensament clàssic alemany. Preguntar-se pel sentit de la Modernitat des d’aquesta perspectiva historiogràfica pot obrir un nou horitzó per situar les línies de filiació, continuïtat i ruptura dels moderns, i entre ells i nosaltres, i esdevenir un instrument per aclarir i avaluar la situació del pensament actual.

El càlcul de la voluntat racional humana compartida és capaç de generar l’instrument o aparell polític que supera, tot incorporant-la en el seu si, la dinàmica pròpia de les associacions naturals de beneficis i afectes mutus particulars que veien perillar la seva existència en la lluita a mort per la supervivència. En Hobbes tots som iguals en les inclinacions fonamentals, fins al punt que no garanteixen per si el respecte a les regles de convivència elementals. D’aquí en resultarà la institució d’una república, Commonwealth o Leviatan.

En Hobbes todos somos iguales en las inclinaciones fundamentales que son de nuestro interés absoluto, hasta el punto de que no está garantizado el respeto a las reglas de convivencia elementales. De ahí resultará la institución de una república, Commonwealth o Leviatán.
