"This was a one year project to determine operational regimes and efficiency of Western Australian longlining operations with the intention of further developing a bigeye tuna and broadbill swordfish fishery. The main target species are broadbill swordfish, bigeye tuna and yellowfin. The fishery off Western Australia is quite new and is only now starting to develop. The full extent of the fishery is, as yet, unknown. This work was carried out off Geraldton (WA) from August to October 1997 by commercial longline fishermen. It involved fishermen recording their catch by hook number (between buoys) as well as deploying Temperature Depth Recorders (TDR's) on some of the hooks. These TDR's record the effective fishing depths (the depth range between the shallowest and deepest hooks) and associated water temperatures of the longline hooks. Further information was obtained from longliners operating off the East Coast of Australia (Japanese and Australian) and off Bali (Indonesian)."--p. 1.
