We know that the speech of Columbus was strongly tinctured with Portuguese, and the effects of his long residence among that people are equally apparent in the extreme rudeness and compression of his written lan guage. This often lends vigor to his expressions, but some times obscures his meaning; hence more than usual care is needed in converting his phrases.
