Constricted government and foundation funding, and damaged endowments have caused historic house museums to falter under the economic turmoil of the current recession. In 2009 The 1772 Foundation, a private funder of historical sites, restoration, and preservation, offered a fellowship to research and devise a plan to develop entrepreneurial earned income opportunities for historic house museums and sites. The Foundation viewed the growing financial crisis within these often small, under-capitalized museums as a compelling issue in the museum and historic preservation field.
