One of the loneliest, most painful places a man can find himself is in a cold, dark prison cell. It is a place very few ever intended to go. Young boys dream of growing up to be policemen, firemen, cowboys-anything but convicts or inmates. But, because some of us could not stay within the boundaries, we found ourselves in too deep. What started out as a little "fun and adventure" finished up being another painful experience. But why? That's what we keep asking. Why?* Why do we continue to bring about self inflicted wounds?* Why do we find ourselves making the same old lap over and over again? * Will I ever get off of this vicious ride and stay off? * Will I ever solidify my walk and stabilize? * Will I ever quit hurting those who love me and causing all this collateral damage? These were my thoughts over and over again. Every time I found myself in YDC, the county jail, the state penitentiary, and finally holed up in solitary confinement, I would ask these questions. It seemed as though I could never find freedom from my own worst enemy, me.

The Better Way to Win is about the movement from linear, competitive thinking to a new way of thinking, which Seger calls “Web thinking” based on the dual images of the spider web and the World Wide Web. In this provocative book, Seger shows that Web thinking is not only more humane but also more effective and more likely to bring lasting success. “The metaphor that shapes our thinking is being transformed by the technologies we use, and by the growing power of women in the world. Linda Seger shows us how to build upon this fundamental shift to create more richly satisfying and connected lives.” --- Sally Helgesen, author of The Web of Inclusion “This book is a small gem! If this were required reading for managers and taught in MBA, the world would become a better place! Web Thinking is a key business philosophy and lifestyle paradigm for twenty-fi rst century information societies.” --- Hazel Henderson, author of Beyond Globalization

While architects have been the subject of many scholarly studies, we know very little about the companies that built the structures they designed. This book is a study in business history as well as civil engineering and construction management. It details the contributions that Charles J. Pankow, a 1947 graduate of Purdue University, and his firm have made as builders of large, often concrete, commercial structures since the company's foundation in 1963. In particular, it uses selected projects as case studies to analyze and explain how the company innovated at the project level. The company has been recognized as a pioneer in "design-build," a methodology that involves the construction company in the development of structures and substitutes negotiated contracts for the bidding of architects' plans. The Pankow companies also developed automated construction technologies that helped keep projects on time and within budget. The book includes dozens of photographs of buildings under construction from the company's archive and other sources. At the same time, the author analyzes and evaluates the strategic decision making of the firm through 2004, the year in which the founder died. While Charles Pankow figures prominently in the narrative, the book also describes how others within the firm adapted the business so that the company could survive a commercial market that changed significantly as a result of the recession of the 1990s. Extending beyond the scope of most business biographies, this book is a study in industry innovation and the power of corporate culture, as well as the story of one particular company and the individuals who created it.

A Better Way To Zone written by Donald L. Elliott and has been published by Island Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-26 with Architecture categories.

Nearly all large American cities rely on zoning to regulate land use. According to Donald L. Elliott, however, zoning often discourages the very development that bigger cities need and want. In fact, Elliott thinks that zoning has become so complex that it is often dysfunctional and in desperate need of an overhaul. A Better Way to Zone explains precisely what has gone wrong and how it can be fixed. A Better Way to Zone explores the constitutional and legal framework of zoning, its evolution over the course of the twentieth century, the reasons behind major reform efforts of the past, and the adverse impacts of most current city zoning systems. To unravel what has gone wrong, Elliott identifies several assumptions behind early zoning that no longer hold true, four new land use drivers that have emerged since zoning began, and basic elements of good urban governance that are violated by prevailing forms of zoning. With insight and clarity, Elliott then identifies ten sound principles for change that would avoid these mistakes, produce more livable cities, and make zoning simpler to understand and use. He also proposes five practical steps to get started on the road to zoning reform. While recent discussion of zoning has focused on how cities should look, A Better Way to Zone does not follow that trend. Although New Urbanist tools, form-based zoning, and the SmartCode are making headlines both within and outside the planning profession, Elliott believes that each has limitations as a general approach to big city zoning. While all three trends include innovations that the profession badly needs, they are sometimes misapplied to situations where they do not work well. In contrast, A Better Way to Zone provides a vision of the future of zoning that is not tied to a particular picture of how cities should look, but is instead based on how cities should operate.

New Way To Care written by John C. Goodman and has been published by Independent Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-07 with Political Science categories.

The COVID-19 pandemic. Obamacare. The Great Recession. The dot-com bust. The early ’90s recession. Every decade or so a disaster hits the United States and reminds us that many American families live one calamity away from financial ruin. But what if there were a better way to help families protect themselves from life’s risks? And what if that way did not require bloated government bureaucracies, increased taxes, and runaway spending and debt? Fortunately, author, economist, policy entrepreneur, and Independent Institute Senior Fellow John C. Goodman, Ph.D., has forged just such a path. In New Way to Care: Social Protections That Put Families First, Dr. Goodman offers a bold but practical strategy for giving Americans more control and security over their own finances and destiny, while still promoting—at far less expense—the vital social goals that gave rise to well-intended but failing government safety-net programs. Here are just a few of the life-risks to which Dr. Goodman—the “Father of Health Savings Accounts,” according to the Wall Street Journal—presents solutions: Growing too old and outliving one’s assets Dying too young and leaving dependent family members without resources Becoming disabled and facing financial catastrophe Suffering a major health event and being unable to afford needed medical care Becoming unemployed and finding no market for one’s skills. In New Way to Care, Dr. Goodman invites us to envision smartly crafted social protections that better empower and serve the nation’s families, harmonize individual and societal interests, foster personal responsibility and government accountability, bridge the partisan divide over social spending—and eliminate the risk that America’s safety-net expenditures will drive the U.S. economy over a fiscal cliff. The debate in America over social insurance will never be the same.

Finding My Way written by Duncan Brown and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-01 with Social Science categories.

This book reflects on South African literature from the perspective of 2020. It emerges from Duncan Brown’s experiences of three decades of working in this field of writing and scholarship. It is a personal intellectual exploration and an engagement with the institutional history of literary studies in South Africa and elsewhere. Finding My Way also attempts to find more creative, engaging and intriguing modes of writing about literature and the humanities universally. It seeks to recover a sense of the imaginative, the literary, and the affective, not only as things to value in the literary texts we read but also as ways of understanding and reading texts, as ways of writing criticism—of registering how books make us feel, as well as how they make us think.
