In today's frenetic society, people rarely develop intimate friendships. Instead, they spend their lives essentially disconnected from others, rushing through life content with brief visits and casual conversations. But what if one were to develop a community, a spiritual community, of people who walked with and supported each other through life's journey? A community of real friends who listened to each other's personal tragedies without merely trying to fix the problems, who encouraged and nurtured each other's strengths, and who accepted people for who they really are, instead of the image they try to portray. In The Safest Place on Earth, Larry Crabb explores such a place, where God can heal disconnected people and allow them to reconnect with each other and, ultimately, with Him.

It was hard work being a hippie. Doing acid and smoking pot made my feelings of insecurity even worse, and coupled with my depression, I was living in the cold fires of hell. I was on a quest to find meaning, maybe even God, but I scoffed at anyone who thought they had a some kind of direct connection. One day I saw the blue sky reflected off the glasses of a preacher standing outside his church. Somehow he seemed to posses the entirety of that blue sky within himself. I kept walking - but that blue sky pierced my heart. We all hunger for something more, above the day-to-day and deep beneath the night-to-night, but we usually don't expect God to break through the normalcy of our lives. And who wants anything to do with Bible-thumping religious people. But I have seen cracks in the boring routine of reality. Honest to God miracles have happened right under my nose. There is light brighter than the sun ready to break out on the dullest of days. There is a quiet voice louder than the constant noise of cities. There is a joy underneath the heaviest sorrows. There are people who smell like heaven. And there is a God who is able and willing to break into our lives.

Few things in life are more difficult than overcoming an addiction. This book is not an expository treatment of alcohol and drug addictions. It's the story of an alcoholic named Jack, who is a compilation of the many addicts Chaplain Day has known personally and has worked with long-term in their struggle to lead sober lives. Jack finds staying sober long-term is nearly impossible. No matter how hard he tries, he eventually fails. "Is there no place on earth that's safe for me, Lord?" he pleads. Read how that prayer is answered by a person named Manny, who serves as a Christian mentor for several years until Jack receives the final lesson that sets him free. We all could use a Manny in our lives and the lessons he teaches Jack. PATRICK DAY is a credentialed chaplain who has ministered to hundreds of addicts in one-on-one sessions and thousands in group settings since 2005. He's taught the lessons in this book to men and women sunk in alcohol, drugs, compulsive sexual behavior, and other destructive addictions.

"Today, mankind has become like the proverbial rabbit in captivity that eats away the wooden cage built to contain him. Weather we like it or not, our wooden earth is man's only wooden cage, and we are under captivity here because we have no other place to migrate to in the awesome universe..." This statement was made by a student who returned home to collect his fees only to see his parent's cocoa farm ceded to gold miners. The miners understood from his statement that they were part of the incisors of man-turn-rabbit; however they continued to uproot the cocoa farmers along with their cocoa trees. The result was a massive ecological damage that engulfed the land of Pehunu and its environs in the Republic of Goldland where each person seeks his personal welfare sidelining environmental issues.

Richard Dadd is a trickster, a pre-post-modern enigma wrapped in a Shakespearean Midsummer Night’s Dream; an Elizabethan Puck living in a smothering Victorian insane asylum, foreshadowing and, in brilliant, Mad Hatter conundrums, entering the fragmented shards of today’s nightmarish oxymorons long before the artists currently trying to give them the joker’s ephemeral maps of discourse. The author thinks of Bob Dylan’s “Ballad of a Thin Man,” that cryptic refusal to reduce the warped mirrors of reality to prosaic lies, or, perhaps “All Along the Watchtower” or “Mr Tambourine Man.” Even more than Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, which curiously enough comes off as overly esoteric, too studied, too conscious, Dadd’s entire existence foreshadows the forbidden entrance into the numinous, the realization of the inexplicable labyrinths of contemporary existence, that wonderfully rich Marcel Duchamp landscape of puns and satiric paradigms, that surrealistic parallax of the brilliant gamester Salvador Dali, that smirking irony of the works of Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Robert Indiana; that fragmented, meta-fictional struggle of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. John Lennon certainly sensed it and couldn’t help but push into meta-real worlds in his own lyrics. Think of “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “I Am the Walrus,” and the more self-conscious “Revolution Number 9.” In “Yer Blues,” he even refers to Dylan’s main character, Mr Jones from “Ballad of a Thin Man.” If Lennon’s song is taken seriously, literally, then it is a dark crying out by a suicidal man, “Lord, I’m lonely, wanna die”; or, if taken as a metaphor for a lover’s lost feelings about his unfulfilled love, it falls into the romantic rant of a typical blues or teenage rock-and-roll song. However, even on this level, it has an irony about it, a sense of laughing at itself and at Dylan’s Mr Jones, who knows something is going on but just not what it is, and then, by extension, all of us who have awakened to the fact that the studied Western world doesn’t make sense, all of us who struggle to find meaning in the nonsense images, characters, and happenings in the song, and perhaps, coming to a conclusion that the nonsense is the sense.
