There is no one monkey species that goes by the label " " in the scientific or popular lexicons. One of the tiniest primates, pygmy marmosets are sometimes referred to by this name. Small in stature and with a peculiar appearance, pygmy marmosets can only be found in South America. Because of their small stature and their ability to wrap their little fingers around trees and other things, these monkeys are frequently referred to as "finger monkeys." - The body length of a pygmy marmoset is normally between 4 and 6 inches (10 and 15 centimeters), while its tail is slightly longer. The long, fluffy tail and white facial characteristics set them apart. These apes are experts in hopping and swinging from branch to branch in the tree canopy. They mostly feed on tree sap and insects. - It's worth noting that while "finger monkey" is a common colloquial moniker for pygmy marmosets, it is not the species' official or scientific name. The scientific term for this monkey is the "pygmy marmoset" (Cebuella pygmaea), which should be used when talking about or studying them.

With expanded coverage of natural dietary habits, gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology, and the nutrient needs of species that have been difficult to maintain in captivity, it explores the impact on nutrition of physiological and life-stage considerations: infancy, weaning, immune function, obesity, aging, and more. The committee also discusses issues of environmental enrichment such as opportunities for foraging. Based on the world's scientific literature and input from authoritative sources, the book provides best estimates of nutrient requirements. The volume covers requirements for energy: carbohydrates, including the role of dietary fiber; proteins and amino acids; fats and fatty acids; minerals, fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins; and water. The book also analyzes the composition of important foods and feed ingredients and offers guidelines on feed processing and diet formulation.

The Common Marmoset in Captivity and Biomedical Research is the first text dedicated exclusively to this species, filling an urgent need for an encyclopedic compilation of the existing information. Sponsored by the AmericanCollege of Laboratory Animal Medicine as part of its authoritative Blue Book series, the book covers the biology, management, diseases, and clinical and research applications of this important species. The common marmoset(Callithrix jacchus) has come of age in the scientific community as a behaviorally complex, cognitively advanced, small, prolific, and easily maintained nonhuman primate with many of the advantages of larger animals, such asmacaques, but without the attendant physical and zoonotic risks. Marmosets are currently being used in diverse areas of inquiry, including vision and auditory research, infectious disease, cognitive neuroscience, behavior, reproductive biology, toxicology and drug development, and aging. Themarmoset genome has been sequenced and there is currently an intensive effort to apply gene editing technologies to the species. The creation of transgenic marmosets will provide researchers with a small nonhuman primatemodel to study a number of poorly understood disorders, like autism. Presents a complete view of the marmoset, covering their biology and management, diseases and clinical applications, and research applications Includes contributions from renowned and international authors and editors Provides the first authoritative and comprehensive treatment of marmosets in biomedical research as part of the ACLAM Series
