Based on potential flow theory, a formulation is given for three-dimensional fully cavitating flow with a Riabouchinsky model. The model is nonlinear and the location of the free surface of the cavity is not known priori. Therefore, an iterative procedure is used to locate the free surface boundary. The employment of a trial-free-boundary approach effectively reduces the fully nonlinear model to a linear one, and the solution at each iteration is obtained by means of the finite element method (FEM). Examples studied were fully cavitating flow past flat plates in a water tunnel. Results are given for pure drag flows past circular and elliptic plates and a lifting flow past a circular plate. Because of the change in flow boundary conditions at the separation edge and the failure of the FEM to resolve these conditions accurately, the ability of the numerical solution to maintain a constant pressure over the entire cavity decreases as the three dimensionality of the free surface increases. However, the present procedure produces absolutely stable iterations and shows no sign of drifting of the free surface. It is found that satisfaction of a tangent separation condition of the free surface from the flat plate body is crucial for the stability of the iterative procedure. Grid refinement in both the streamwise and transverse directions reduces the computational error. While free surface movement between iterations is a useful convergence criterion, a flow-rate balance between upstream and downstream cross-sections appears not to be a good criterion.

A framework and code have been developed to simulate fiber and film processes; the code can handle three-dimensional, isothermal, incompressible, creeping flow of a Giesekus fluid with free surfaces at infinite capillary number. The code is an extension of the parallel methods developed by Caola et al. from two- to three-dimensional flows, a restructured and improved version of the three-dimensional code of Phillips based on the subproblem formulation. The free surface motion used is an extension of the axially-constrained finite difference method of Phillips from two to three dimensions; internal domain deformation is upgraded from an elliptic mapping technique, only suitable for two-dimensional geometries, to the treatment of the domain as a fictitious elastic solid that conforms to the free surface, similar to the methods of Cairncross et al. The verification of the code and its utility are tested against the ability to capture experimental behavior in a set of benchmark problems which benefit from its ability to compute fully three-dimensional flow fields. Fluids with a nonzero second normal stress difference in simple shear flow, such as Giesekus fluids, exhibit secondary flows in non-circular, non-annular pipes. The code predicts the fully-developed three-dimensional velocity field in flow of a square duct in agreement with Yue et al. Elastically-driven flow transitions from a two-dimensional, steady flow to a three-dimensional, time periodic flow also motivate the need for three-dimensional solvers, which should be able to capture the onset directly. Flow around a closely-spaced linear periodic array of cylinders in a rectangular channel, a flow studied experimentally by Liu, exhibits this kind of flow transition. Numerical simulations have been conducted in this geometry with the Oldroyd-B model, [beta] = 0.67, wall separation distances between 4-32 radii, and Deborah number 0.1

A finite element model has been developed for simulating the dynamics of problems encountered in atmospheric pollution and safety assessment studies. The model is based on solving the set of three-dimensional, time-dependent, conservation equations governing incompressible flows. Spatial discretization is performed via a modified Galerkin finite element method, and time integration is carried out via the forward Euler method (pressure is computed implicitly, however). Several cost-effective techniques (including subcycling, mass lumping, and reduced Gauss-Legendre quadrature) which have been implemented are discussed. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the applicability of the model.
