Readers will get a sense of the uniqueness of Finland's geography and culture of Finland in this fascinating volume. One of the most remote and ruggedly beautiful countries in the world, Finland for centuries was dominated by its powerful neighbors Sweden and Russia. In the last century, it has transformed itself into a strong democratic nation and, in the last decade, has emerged as a world leader in information and communication technology. In addition, this book portrays the history of the Finnish people, from ancient to modern times.

Topics include Fenno-Scandia inhabitants and their environment, traditional naturalism and modern environmentalism, and the salient features of "Finnishness," including an analysis of the Finnish educational system and gender equality. Finland's art, architecture and music are highlighted, along with its peace-keeping missions worldwide. The country's several ethnic groups and their languages are discussed--the Saami, Finns, Finland-Swedes, Russian-speaking peoples, Jews and Gypsies. The author examines Finland's late but rapid development in commerce and industry, with a focus on the history of Nokia Corporation, which grew from a 19th-century manufacturer of pulpwood and rubber boots to a 21st-century international digital communications company.

Excerpt from Finland and the Finns The present book is written from the stand point of one who has made his home in Finland, and the writer hopes that what he may have lost in the freshness of first impressions may prove to be more than counterbalanced by increased intimacy with the land and people described. As Finland, in spite of the excellent books that have been written by thoughtful and observant travellers, is still but little known, it has seemed best to concentrate attention on the leading features of Finnish life, and not to go too much into details which, in the absence of a conception of the country as a whole, might easily prove wearisome or confusing. The general ignorance of Finland has also made a small amount of repetition unavoidable, as it has been necessary to summarize in the Introduction matters which are treated at greater length in subsequent chapters. It may be as well to point out that the term "Finn" is sometimes used to denote any citizen of Finland, and sometimes, in a narrower sense, to distinguish the Finnish-speaking from the Swedish-speaking population of the country. Similarly "Swede" sometimes signifies an inhabitant of Sweden, and sometimes is used to distinguish the Swedish-speaking from the Finnish-speaking population of Finland.
