Nel corso dell’XI secolo i presuli fiorentini intrapresero diverse iniziative di riforma della diocesi. Il loro impegno in questo senso fu supportato da quegli esponenti del gruppo parentale hucpoldingio, nato a Firenze alla metà del IX secolo e poi affermatosi anche in altre aree geografiche del Regnum, che all’epoca avevano mantenuto interessi nel centro urbano e nel comitatus. Fra questi si distinse la stirpe signorile degli Adimari, che intorno al Mille instaurarono una duratura collaborazione col vescovado. Adottando modalità di interazione politica e sociale caratteristiche dell’epoca carolingia, adeguate però ai nuovi tempi ed esigenze, essi perpetuarono fin oltre alla metà del secolo quella leadership laica che aveva caratterizzato il rapporto dei loro antenati con la città.

Since 1971, the International Congress for Neo-Latin Studies has been organised every three years in various cities in Europe and North America. In August 2009, Uppsala in Sweden was the venue of the fourteenth Neo-Latin conference, held by the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies. Nel Canto X dell’Inferno, tra i miscredenti che negarono l’immortalità dell’anima, Dante incontra Farinata degli Uberti, il capo della fazione ghibellina vittorioso a Montaperti, nel 1260, sulla Firenze guelfa. Farinata – morto nel 1264, l’anno prima che Dante nascesse – rappresenta uno dei più eminenti fiorentini della generazione che aveva compiuto scelte capitali e partecipato a eventi irreversibili. È con quella eredità che Dante vuole misurarsi, sfidando, in una sorta di infernale anacronismo, il capo della fazione avversa: quel Farinata perseguitato post mortem, ma ancora vivo nella memoria della città. È uno scontro aspro, all’inizio, ma poi si stempera nel comune amore per la patria fiorentina, e si conclude con la riabilitazione postuma di Farinata. Chissà quale sarebbe stata la sorte della Toscana, dell’Italia e del mondo occidentale senza la luce della civiltà fiorentina, senza Farinata.
