The Fire Research Station, Building Research Establishment in collaboration with British Steel Technical, Swinden Laboratories have conducted nine fully developed fire tests in a purpose built large (i.e. 23m deep x 6m wide x 3m high) compartment in the BRE Cardington Laboratory. The programme was sponsored by the Department of Environment and British Steel Sections, Plates and Commercial Steels. The main aim was to collect information on combustion gas temperatures and temperature-time profiles for short lengths of protected and unprotected steel beam and column section suspended from the compartment roof so that equivalent times of fire exposure could be deduced for different ventilation openings, fire load densities, depth of compartment and thermal characteristics of the compartment boundaries. These measurements would be used to check if the empirical relationship for equivalent time of fire exposure (expressed as a period of fire resistance) given in the 'Actions on structures exposed to fire' part of structural Eurocode 1 was valid [1]. British Steel Technical has reported most of these results in ref 2. A secondary aim was to provide additional data of interest to fire modellers: data such as rate of mass loss of the combustible contents (ie timber cribs); production of CO and CO2 and depletion of oxygen; velocity of air entering and hot gases leaving the compartment; thermal radiation from the ventilation opening and from the external flames/hot gas plume, and temperatures in the flames/plume outside the opening.
