Excerpt from First Lines of the Human Mind Much Revered Sirs, In dedicating to you the fruits of my more mature labor, and the present time being one in which the sentiments of every individual appear to be pregnant with some consequence, I first desire to prostrate myself with ineffable gratitude and adoration to Almighty God, for having bestowed upon me, together with existence, three of the most precious gifts which any sublunary being can enjoy; - a desire to contemplate the general laws of His Providence; - an age and country in which I have liberty to express my conceptions of them; - and means to relinquish other pursuits in favor of this bent, without stooping to solicitation, or dependence upon aid, which might have prevented my choice, or biassed my opinions. Excerpt from A Fragment on the Human Mind First, those comprehensive histories have been written by foreign, mostly German, scholars. It is only within the last fifty years that British thinkers have studied the history of philosophic thought in its completeness, and though some important contributions to this branch of study have recently appeared in this country, they refer mostly to ancient philosophy. Excerpt from The Human Mind: In Its Relations With the Brain and Nervous System My Dear Dr. Carpenter, - Whether I have regard to your eminent position as a man of science, to your special attainments as a physiologist, or to your private worth, I know of no one to whom I can inscribe this little work with so much propriety and with such gratification to my own feelings, as to yourself. Although, in the course of independent thought, I have been led to conclusions not altogether in unison with some of those at which you have yourself arrived, I am not the less conscious that I am indebted to you and to your writings for most of the fundamental doctrines expounded in the ensuing pages. Excerpt from The Origin of Thought The study of the human mind, it appears to me, ought to be as easy as the study of the body and it probably would be if those who write of it were to express themselves in language understanded of the people. But generally Speaking this is not done. Men, therefore, who are under the impression that they can speak and understand what is written in their own language, are in consequence surprised when they take up a book professing to explain the human mind, to find that books can be written in their own language of which they can understand scarcely a single sentence. The result is they give it up in despair. A middle-aged fox terrier who has seen himself twice in a mirror, will generally, when it is placed before him for the third time, turn away from it. He cannot understand it, and to be forced to look into it gives him pain. Many years ago the writer lent a Copy of Sir W. Hamilton's Metaphysics to a clergyman who was a university graduate. After reading the first two chapters the book was returned by the reader, who said he could make nothing of it, and had no idea what it was about. Urged to persevere, he definitely declined, saying he could never understand it. Yet there is no doubt that Sir W. Hamilton wrote under the impression that his books would be Simplicity itself to graduates, for he wrote to explain metaphysics and logic.
