Excerpt from The Origin of Thought and Speech When opening my eyes in the morning, and whilst still struggling with an inclination to Sleep, I review the day and what it will have in store for me; but the pictures drawn are confused, and my will takes no part in it. For some time I have been haunted by the impression that the mental faculties Of the generality Of men have not succeeded in throwing Off a species of torpor resem bling that of a person hardly awake the supposition that this torpid condition prevents our minds from attaining that degree of lucidity to which they have a right to aspire, is perhaps a hallucination, yet possibly I may be right in thinking it. How many confused ideas traverse my brain in one day, and how seldom those come of which I follow the thread. We know well that injunction SO Often given by parents to children, and by schoolmasters to their pupils: Try to concentrate your attention. It almost seems as if that which we require Of children is beyond my powers, for I have hardly resolved to disentangle a pro blem Of whatever kind, when, under the form of useless, futile, inept thoughts, Obstacles heap themselves across my path. I conclude from this that a fatal somnolence paralyses my faculties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Thinking: An Introduction to Its History and Science Has the reader ever told a lie? If so, was it right to tell that lie. Or better. Could it ever be right to lie? It is easy to say people ought not to tell lies. But when deciding about oneself it becomes a most uh comfortable question; we will therefore change the subject by asking a few others of varying character. Excerpt from The Origin of Consciousness: An Attempt to Conceive the Mind as a Product of Evolution IN a work published some years ago I attempted to Show that panpsychism, or the theory of mind-stufi, deals more successfully than other philosophies with the problem of mind and body, since it enables us (1) to reconcile psychophysical parallelism with the efficacy of mind, (2) to explain why two such things as mind and body are connected at all. Certain difficulties, it is true, remained, which I mentioned at the end of the book and reserved for future treatment the seeming disparity in complexity between the mind and the brain-process, the nature of mind-stuff, the origin of consciousness out of it. To solve, if possible, these difficulties is the aim of the present} volume. My object being thus to elaborate and fortify the theory, it will perhaps be useful if I brie y recall its main outlines and the premises on which it rests. In doing so, I shall have an opportunity to acknowledge certain changes in my philosophical Views that have taken place during the fifteen years since the other work appeared - changes relating to the premises.
