Human curiosity has led us to explore our solar system, landing on the moon and sending spacecraft to study distant planetary objects. The next step in our great adventure is putting humans on Mars, but what will it really take to achieve this? In 2011, Mars One announced its intentions to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars beginning as early as 2024; in 2013 it launched its astronaut-selection program and received thousands of applications. The highly anticipated Mars One documentary series will provide a window into the captivating details of the crew selection and training process, allowing the whole world to follow along as Mars' first settlers prepare for their mission. Now, with Mars One: Humanity's Next Great Adventure, you can step even further inside the experience of these astronaut pioneers and explore the various human dimensions of Mars One's planned expeditions. Edited by Norbert Kraft, MD, Mars One's Chief Medical Officer and head of crew selection and training, as well as crew selection and training committee members James R. Kass, PhD, and Raye Kass, PhD, this collection of essays from scientists, psychologists, and more provides a behind-the-scenes look at the process and criteria used to choose candidates, fascinating details about what they'll learn, and predictions about their future lives on Mars. Inside, you'll find in-depth discussions of: The essential skills and training the Mars One astronauts will need to journey to and then survive on Mars, from technical and medical know-how to the interpersonal skills necessary for working in confined quarters so far from home The challenges of going through the selection and training process while being watched by millions around the world, and what Mars One hopes watching the process will mean for viewers at home Inside information, including images, on the planned Mars One habitats and colonization timeline What settlers can expect on Mars, from daily work activities in a hostile environment to communication with Earth and options for leisure time The book also includes excerpts from candidate questionnaires, allowing readers to enter the minds of prospective Martians like never before.

Can astronauts reach Mars by 2035? Absolutely, says Buzz Aldrin, one of the first men to walk on the moon. Celebrated astronaut, brilliant engineer, bestselling author, Aldrin believes it is not only possibly but vital to America’s future to keep pushing the space frontier outward for the sake of exploration, science, development, commerce, and security. What we need, he argues, is a commitment by the U.S. President as rousing as JFK’s promise to reach the moon by the end of the 1960s—an audacious, inspiring goal-and a unified vision for space exploration. In Mission to Mars, Aldrin plots that trajectory, stressing that American-led space exploration is essential to the economic and technological vitality of the nation and the world. Do you dare to dream big? Then join Aldrin in his thought provoking and inspiring Mission to Mars.

How feasible is a manned Mars flight? How soon will it be possible? How long will it take? What kind of spacecraft will make the journey? What kind of data will be collected? What are the advantages of a manned flight over an unmanned? Mission to Mars discusses these questions and more in this serious, documented treatment of the not-too-distant manned expedition to Mars. The shuttle has proved successful and an enthusiastic boost to American interest in space. But while many laypeople wonder “what’s next,” scientists are planning what they feel is the next logical step. Drawing on the vast amount of data sent back by Viking orbiters and probes, and existing developments in propulsion and space technology, space experts all over have been speculating, analyzing, and exchanging ideas relative to the long-awaited mission to Mars. Other factors, critical to an intelligent discussion of such an undertaking are included here: spaceship design and assembly, propulsion systems, navigation principles, life support systems, selecting a landing site, scientific activities on Mars, cost factors, political and social issues.

This book follows astronauts from selection, through training, to the journey to the red planet. During training one of the trainees dies in suspicious circumstances, and then investigators disappear. When they get into space to reach the space ship that is to take them to Mars, the astronauts find that it is mainly being built by robots and androids, with some help from humans. The International Space Station is reaching the end of its useful life in Earth orbit, so it is being used to form the main structure of the new space ship. During the build of the interplanetary craft 'Phoenix' one of the astronauts has an 'accident' when she gets whisked off into space. The Chinese conclude they have had enough at this stage, so they leave the consortium. It is agreed that if any more countries decide to quit the whole programme will be in danger, so a slightly premature departure is undertaken. The crew consists of two Americans, two Russians, one Japanese and one Brit. One of the Russians and the Japanese are women. There are problems on the way to Mars when one of the Russians causes trouble. The landing procedures and dramas are described in great detail. In order to survive six to nine months on the planet the astronauts need plenty of supplies. These are provided in four large supply vessels which they bring with them. Three land with them, but the fourth one seems go astray. Mark, the Brit, finds it, and the reason why we have always been fascinated by the concept of men from Mars. Then things start to get exciting. More of the astronauts find the secret. The robots begin to turn on the humans to prevent the secret getting out, but eventually, after a long fight, the astronauts manage to get off the planet. Only to be pursued by androids in the supply vessels which are faster than the Phoenix?

“A handsome and engaging children’s book. . . . This accessible look at interplanetary exploration will appeal to a broad range of young space enthusiasts.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) On August 6, 2012, the rover Curiosity touched down on the rocky surface of Mars—and now she’s ready to guide you through her journey. From idea to creation and beyond, this fact-filled, stylish book introduces readers to Curiosity and her mission: to discover more about the red planet and search for evidence of life. How did Curiosity get her name? What tools does she use to carry out her tasks? The popular NASA rover narrates how and why she traveled more than 350,000,000 miles to explore a planet no human has ever visited . . . and what she has been doing there for the past decade or so. Markus Motum brings Curiosity’s story to life in vivid color: the deep blues of space set off the warm, rusted hues of Mars’s dusty red surface, marking this lovable rover and her mission as something special—truly a world apart.
