Excerpt from First Year Latin, Preparatory to Caesar Most teachers will measure the value of a beginning book by the thoroughness with which it prepares for the work to be done in the second year. The work of second-year Latin in this country centres, as a rule, around the study of Caesar's Commentaries and the Latin Grammar. The present volume is intended to meet both these ends in the most successful way. In order to prepare the pupil for the intelligent and effective study of Caesar, the vocabulary has been chosen from a limited number (about 750) of the commonest words employed by Caesar in the Gallic War. The syntax, too, has been restricted, except in the rarest instances, to that employed by Caesar. At the earliest possible point consistent with honest work, simple passages of continuous prose have been introduced, giving in outline the chief features of Caesar's campaigns against the Helvetii and Ariovistus. At the close of the Lessons, Book II of the Gallic War is given with annotation. To prepare for the systematic study of the Latin Grammar, - the second main line of endeavor in the Latin Work of the second year, - the grouping of the material throughout the book has been made to follow as nearly as possible the arrangement of all our Latin grammars. The First Year of Latin is the product of practical experience in the classroom. It aims in the most direct manner to prepare the pupil to read Caesar s Gallic Wars. While a general survey of the essential features of the Latin grammar is made, only those parts are emphasized which are needed. With few exceptions the words and phrases are taken directly from Caesar s War with the Helvetii, and by their frequent repetition a sufficient vocabulary is established to simplify the reading of Caesar in the second year. Special attention is given to reviews. At short intervals a lesson is made up of questions on the new forms and constructions of the lessons immediately preceding it, together with a repetition of the new words and such sentences of Caesar as will be used later. The earlier review lessons contain sentences for sight-reading, based on the review vocabulary. In the later lessons connected passages covering chapters 1-12 of The War with the Helvetii replace these. "

Excerpt from Caesar's First Campaign: A Beginner's Latin Book The rejuvenation of Latin must begin with the beginning. A first-year book, written a quarter of a century ago, revisions and imitations of the same and so-called Caesar books written on this antiquated plan, depend for interest as well as for apperception on English Grammar, about which the beginner knows little and cares less. After a year of remorseless grinding of forms and rules set in no relations of recognized utility and possessing no human interest, the survivor of this grilling process enters upon the second year's work not only "emptied of all desire to learn," but endowed with a mental attitude of hostility towards Latin. Unaccustomed to finding any vital significance in what he has been doing in the first year, he fails to respond to belated efforts to interest him in really attractive editions of Caesar, for the enjoyment of which his preparation has not only been utterly incompetent but positively prejudicial. The authors of "Caesar's First Campaign" have earnestly endeavored to make first-year work interesting and valuable in itself, with a view to lessening the "mortality" in the first year as well as to giving the beginner such a mental attitude and equipment as shall make his subsequent Latin course pleasant and profitable. The beginner's natural love of a story, his elementary knowledge of geography and history, have been from the earliest pages depended upon for the promotion of interest and apperception.
