Aesthetics of Absence presents a significant challenge to the many embedded assumptions and hierarchical structures that have become ‘naturalised’ in western theatre production. This is the first English translation of a new collection of writings and lectures by Heiner Goebbels, the renowned German theatre director, composer and teacher. These writings map Goebbels’ engagement with ‘Aesthetics of Absence’ through his own experience at the forefront of innovative music-theatre and performance making. In this volume, Goebbels reflects on works created over a period of more than 20 years staged throughout the world; introduces some of his key artistic influences, including Robert Wilson and Jean-Luc Godard; discusses the work of his students and ex-students, the collective Rimini Protokoll; and sets out the case for a radical rethinking of theatre and performance education. He gives us a rare insight into the rehearsal process of critically acclaimed works such as Eraritjaritjaka and Stifters Dinge, explaining in meticulous detail the way he weaves an eclectic range of references from fine art, theatre, literature, politics, anthropology, contemporary and classical music, jazz and folk, into his multi-textured music-theatre compositions. Cuando es la de allegados, se convierte en un tragedia que nos afecta profundamente; cuando se trata de la conciencia de nuestro propio final, nos produce una terrible angustia. Concebimos nuestra propia muerte como la extinción sin residuos del yo personal, y por tanto como la imposición absoluta de lo totalmente heterogéneo. Ante esta perspectiva, la inminencia de la muerte puede despertar un amor heroico, en el que el yo deja paso al otro y así se promete una supervivencia. De este modo, en torno a la muerte surgen complejas líneas de tensión que se entrecruzan entre el yo y el otro. Muerte y alteridad toma como referencia a Kant, Heidegger, Lévinas y Canetti, entre otros, para indagar en la compleja relación de tensión en los conceptos de muerte, poder, identidad y transformación. En esta obra rigurosamente filosófica, Byung Chul Han reflexiona sobre la re-acción a la muerte, que se contrapone o bien con el énfasis del yo o bien con el amor heroico. Frente a estas formas de encarar la muerte, el presente libro muestra otra manera de "ser para la muerte", un modo de tomar conciencia de la mortalidad que conduce a la serenidad. Asimismo, se tematiza una experiencia de la finitud con la que se aguza una sensibilidad especial para lo que no es el yo: la afabilidad.

This essay is offered particularly as a contribution to the relationship between theological and literary writings on the Holocaust. Franz Baermann Steiner’s (1909–1952) detailed sociological work – he taught at the Department of Social Anthropology at Oxford and developed a sociology of danger that strongly influenced Mary Douglas, T. W. Adorno, Iris Murdoch, H.G. Adler and Julia Kristeva – contrasts with Canetti’s emphasis on shock. Canetti’s response to the Holocaust constitutes, in Dominick LaCapra’s terms, an ‘acting out’ of trauma: a comparison between Canetti’s »Masse und Macht« and the anthropological texts he uses brings to the fore his bleak depicton of humanity. By contrast, Steiner – in comparison to Canetti – lays emphasis on ‘working through’ the Holocaust, that is to say, on overcoming the paralysis of trauma by reflecting critically on values that might transform a damaged society. However, Canetti’s depiction of humanity cannot entirely be seen in LaCapra’s notion of ‘acting out’: for through the shock of ‘acting out’, Canetti nonetheless wants to bring about a ‘working through’. Similarly, despite the ‘working through’ shock and trauma are dramatized in Steiner’s poetry and his aphoristic writings. Morever, Canetti thematizes an ethical impact on his readership in his aphorisms. In response to the Holocaust both writers advance a theory of power: what Steiner calls danger, Canetti attacks as death. Steiner’s and Canetti’s respective responses to the Holocaust consists in a critique of static ways of thought, affirming ‘metamorphosis’, and deconceptualized understanding of the world which connects linguistic fluidity to the everchanging contextualities of social and embodied life.
