This book provides a thoroughly researched biography of the naval career of Matthew Flinders, with particular emphasis on his importance for the maritime discovery of Australia. Sailing in the wake of the 18th-century voyages of exploration by Captain Cook and others, Flinders was the first naval commander to circumnavigate Australia's coastline. He contributed more to the mapping and naming of places in Australia than virtually any other single person. His voyage to Australia on H.M.S. Investigator expanded the scope of imperial, geographical and scientific knowledge. This biography places Flinders's career within the context of Pacific exploration and the early white settlement of Australia. Flinders's connections with other explorers, his use of patronage, the dissemination of his findings, and his posthumous reputation are also discussed in what is an important new scholarly work in the field.

Flinders Aluminum Fabrication Corporation burned to the ground on the night of November 16. George Avery, an employee of the plant, died inside. Plaintiff Jackson, the sole stockholder of the company, has filed a civil action lawsuit to recover damages owed from the policy issued by defendant Mismo Fire Insurance Company. The defendant has refused to pay, claiming that the fire was the work of an arsonist, thus indicating deliberate fraud. Mismo asserts that Jackson conspired with others to burn the plant in order to collect what was promised in the insurance policy. This breach-of-contract case file has four witnesses for both the plaintiff and the defendant. Videos of the fire, deposition statements, and a PowerPoint presentation are included as free downloads. A companion criminal case file, State v. Jackson, involves the charge of arson against Arthur Jackson. Both case files are NITA classics that have been updated in 2017. Read more about the case files in this interview with two of their authors.

This wonderful collection of letters chronicles the extraordinary life of Flinders, and is designed to give an insight into his fascinating career. In just twenty-three years, from 1791 to his death at the age of forty in 1814, Flinders served under William Bligh on the famous breadfruit expedition to Jamaica, fought a celebrated battle against the French, discovered Bass Strait and charted Tasmania, circumnavigated the Australian continent, and wrote one of the legendary books of exploration. This beautifully illustrated publication offers over one hundred of Flinders' letters, documenting his life's great achievements. It includes highlights such as the historically significant letter to Sir Joseph Banks, volunteering for the formidable task of completing the discovery of New Holland, and a recently discovered letter from Flinders to George Bass, which throws new light on their intimate relationship.
