In questo volume viene presentata la grande diversità della flora vascolare alloctona d’Italia attraverso l’analisi della distribuzione regionale delle 1.023 specie vegetali di origine esotica, ossia introdotte dall’uomo da altre regioni geografiche, che si riproducono autonomamente e sono entrate quindi a far parte della flora locale. L’enfasi è posta sulle piante invasive, ossia su quel limitato gruppo di specie che si diffonde rapidamente su vaste aree, causando spesso danni all’ambiente, alla salute o ai beni dell’uomo. Viene evidenziata l’importanza di conoscere l’ecologia di queste specie e di aumentare la consapevolezza della popolazione riguardo ai rischi associati ad atteggiamenti irresponsabili come il rilascio di animali e piante esotici nell’ambiente e la diffusione delle entità più dannose. Tuttavia dai risultati di questo lavoro si evidenzia soprattutto la notevole ricchezza della flora esotica d’Italia, costituita prevalentemente da specie di grande interesse. Infatti, il principale risultato che emerge dallo studio è che la conservazione della funzionalità degli ecosistemi e la corretta utilizzazione del territorio e delle sue risorse non consentono l’instaurarsi di gravi eventi invasivi e sono le premesse necessarie perchè l’inserimento di nuove specie avvenga in equilibrio con l’ambiente, in un sistema caratterizzato da continuo mutamento e grande diversità, aspetti che hanno sempre contraddistinto la vita e la sua evoluzione.

This book provides an updated list of the vascular flora of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, incorporating the latest nomenclatural and floristic findings. The list of plants was extrapolated from a geographic database including all data from floristic or vegetational references and herbarium specimens concerning the Park area. This data storage tool was obtained from the database of Abruzzo vascular flora (Conti et al. 2010) and adapted to the study area by adding those areas of the Park falling in the regions of Lazio and Molise and their accompanying floristic and vegetational data. Analysis of the data has allowed gaps in the floristic knowledge of the Park, such as comparatively or completely unexplored areas, to be identified, together with those species records that still require confirmation and/or further study. On the basis of these deductions, fieldwork aimed at the collection of new floristic data was carried out. Verification of the correct identification of herbarium specimens collected in the past, as well as a systematic study of critical genera, were also important priorities.

The scope of this book is to show that protected areas may be the regions where early signs of the impact of global change can be observed. These signs are not limited to physical parameters like temperature, precipitation, etc. but could include changes in the biosphere and in social behavior. The book is a collection of papers presented at the meeting `Global Change and Protected Areas' held in L'Aquila, Italy, in September 1998. It is divided into four sections dealing with the physical evidence for climatic and environmental changes, the impact on the biosphere and hydrology and the socio-economic implications. The last section is a case study on the Abruzzo Region which has the peculiarity among the Italian regions of having dedicated a third of its territory to natural parks. Most of the contributions have been prepared for this book and each section is opened by a general review that may also be very useful as a teaching tool. The book will be useful for both the researcher and the student. This rather interdisciplinary subject is totally new, with very few books in print.

In view of the massive change in the area of distribution of many world biota across classical biogeographical realms, and of the drastic restructuring of the biotic components of numerous ecosystems, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) decided at its general Assembly in Ottawa, Canada, in 1982 to launch a project on the 'Ecology of Biological Invasions'. Several regional meetings were subsequently organized within the framework of SCOPE, in order to single out the peculiarities of the invasions that took place in each region, the behaviour of their invasive species and the invasibility of their ecosystems. Most noteworthy among such workshops were one in Australia in August 1984, one concerning North America and Hawaii in October 1984, and one dealing with southern Africa in November 1985. A leitmotiv of these workshops was that most of the invasive species to those regions were emanating from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, inadvertently or intentionally introduced by man. It was therefore considered as a timely endeavour to organize the next regional meeting in relation to this region. The workshop on 'Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin' was held in Montpellier, France, 21 to 23 May 1986, thanks to the financial support of SCOPE and of the A.W. Mellon Foundation, and the logistic facilities of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (C.N .R.S.).
