English summary: This is a catalog of the exhibition held at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence from October 3th to 29th, 2009. "Florence by Cy DeCosse is dedicated to the city of Florence and to the friends, artists and artisans that make this city a beacon of art and culture. For over fifty years Florence has been a muse to me. When I first arrived in Florence as a Fulbright student in 1954, the city was war-damaged, with bullet holes in walls and bridges destroyed, but with an unbroken spirit. Even as the Florentines struggled to provide daily necessities, they applauded Aida in the Boboli Gardens and rebuilt the Trinita Bridge stone by stone. I began my study of photography at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana with Maestro Renzo Maggini. From him I learned principles that still guide my work today. Since my student days, I have returned again and again to this city of art to draw inspiration from the creativity and craftsmanship which is everywhere in Florence." (Cy DeCosse). Florence by Cy DeCosse è dedicata alla città di Firenze e agli amici, artisti e artigiani che hanno reso questa città un faro dell'arte e della cultura. Per più di cinquant'anni Firenze è stata la mia musa. Quando sono arrivato a Firenze per la prima volta, nel 1954, avendo ricevuto una borsa di studio Fulbright, la città era stata danneggiata dalla guerra. Le mura erano sforacchiate dai proiettili e i ponti erano stati fatti saltare in aria, ma lo spirito della città era intatto. I fiorentini lottavano per sfamarsi e coprirsi, ma applaudivano pure l' Aida nel Giardino di Boboli e ricostruirono il Ponte di Santa Trinita pietra su pietra. Iniziai i miei studi di fotografia all'Istituto d'Arte di Porta Romana con il Maestro Renzo Maggini, il quale mi insegnò i principii che ancora oggi mi guidano nel mio lavoro di fotografo. Da allora, dai miei giorni di studente, sono ritornato molte volte in questa città d'arte per trarre ispirazione dalla creatività e dalla qualità della lavorazione artigianale che si trovano ovunque a Firenze, (Cy DeCosse).

John Ruskin, one of the greatest writers and thinkers of the nineteenth century, was also one of the most prolific. Not only did he publish some 250 works, but he also wrote lectures, diaries, and thousands of letters that have not been published. This book--the second and final volume of Tim Hilton's acclaimed biography of Ruskin, which is published on the centenary of Ruskin's death--draws on the original source material to give a moving account of the life of this brilliant and creative man. The book begins in 1859, when Ruskin, a famous author with a disastrous marriage behind him, is living with his parents, writing and traveling, and tutoring--among other pupils--Rose La Touche, a girl of ten, with whom he slowly falls in love. Hilton recounts how this relationship developed into one of the saddest love affairs of literary history, ending in tragedy in 1875. Thereafter, says Hilton, Ruskin's life was punctuated by bouts of insanity and despair that culminated in total breakdown for the last ten years of his life. During these years, however, his intellect and imagination reached new heights, as he produced Praeterita and most of Fors Clavigera, the series of monthly letters to British workers. Hilton's magisterial narrative follows Ruskin through this period and shows that he was the most eloquent and radical of all the great Victorian writers.
