Novels such as One Hundred Years of Solitude have awakened English-language readers to the existence of Colombian literature in recent years, but Colombia has a well-established literary tradition that far predates the Latin American "boom." In this pathfinding study, Raymond Leslie Williams provides an overview of seventeen major authors and more than one hundred works spanning the years 1844 to 1987. After an introductory discussion of Colombian regionalism and novelistic development, Williams considers the novels produced in Colombia's four semi-autonomous regions. The Interior Highland Region is represented by novels ranging from Eugenio Díaz' Manuela to Eduardo Caballero Calderón's El buen salvaje. The Costa Region is represented by Juan José Nieto's Ingermina to Alvaro Cepeda Samudio's La casa grande and Gabriel García Márquez' Cien años de soledad; the Greater Antioquian Region by Tomás Carrasquilla's Frutos de mi tierra to Manuel Mejía Vallejo's El día señalado; and the Greater Cauca Region by Jorge Isaacs' Maria to Gustavo Alvarez Gardeazábal's El bazar de los idiotas. Peru's indigenous peoples played a key role in the tortured tale of Shining Path guerrillas from the 1960s through the first decade of the twenty-first century. The villagers of Chuschi and Huaychao, high in the mountains of the department of Ayacucho, have an iconic place in this violent history. Emphasizing the years leading up to the peak period of violence from 1980 to 2000, when 69,000 people lost their lives, Miguel La Serna asks why some Andean peasants chose to embrace Shining Path ideology and others did not. La Historia de la insigne Orden del Toisón de Oro, de Julián de Pinedo y Salazar, fue editada en Madrid en tres tomos por la Imprenta Real en 1787, y dedicada por su autor a Carlos III. Esta obra, única en su género, ha sido coeditada por el BOE con la Real Academia de la Historia y ha utilizado para la confección del facsímil la edición depositada en la biblioteca de aquella. El volumen I, con 672 páginas, se abre con un grabado alegórico de la Orden (véase imagen adjunta) y contiene la relación de Grandes Maestres de la Orden y la relación de Caballeros (emperadores, reyes, príncipes soberanos y archiduques de Austria), semblanza del fundador, Felipe el Bueno, Duque de Borgoña y para cada Gran Maestre (rama española, casas de Austria y Borbón), desde Felipe el Bueno a Carlos III de España, una relación de las designaciones de caballeros con una breve reseña biográfica de cada uno de ellos. Se cierra con un índice onomástico. El volumen II, con 800 páginas, se abre con una defensa de los derechos del Rey de España a ostentar la condición de Gran Maestre. Prosigue con una exposición sobre el ceremonial de la Orden, investidura de caballeros, insignias y collares, oficios y capillas. Finalmente, el volumen III, con 610 páginas, contiene la historia jurídica de la Orden: sus Constituciones, bulas y breves pontificios expedidos a su favor, privilegios y franquicias de los Grandes Maestres, los principales capítulos y consejos celebrados bajo el emperador Carlos V y descripción de algunas ceremonias de investidura en los siglos XVI y XVII.
