"Die wahre Übersetzung ist durchscheinend", schrieb Walter Benjamin. Als Gedächtniskunst ermöglicht die Sprachenbegegnung eine Blütenlese messianischer Gesten. Übersetzungen der "Tableaux Parisiens" von Charles Baudelaire erscheinen nach beinahe zehn Jahren der Übersetzungsarbeit 1923 in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe. Das Vorwort, "Die Aufgabe des Übersetzers", entzieht sich mit seiner berühmt-berüchtigten Bilderflut und verschlungenen Argumentation der Beantwortung der Frage, was die darin formulierten Überlegungen mit den vorgelegten Gedichtübersetzungen zu tun haben, während diese meist aus der Perspektive der Ende der 1930er Jahre aus dem Passagenwerk hervorgehenden Arbeiten zu Baudelaire gelesen werden. Folgt man jedoch dem "Gefühlston" der Worte als einer Spur, die aus den Differenzen zwischen Original und Übersetzung hervortritt und das Gedichtete in die im Vorwort zu denkende Aufgabe des Übersetzens hinüberfließen lässt, wird deutlich, dass Benjamin Baudelaires "Tableaux" in einen Ausdruck der Gefühlskälte der Zwischenkriegszeit übersetzt. Es ist diese Gefühlskälte, auf die das Vorwort mit einer auch die Typographie erfassenden Denklandschaft antwortet, die Natalie Chamat als skizzenhaften Grundriss späterer Bildkomplexe des Benjamin`schen Denkens analysiert. Von Bild zu Bild entsteht so ein Weg des Eingedenkens, der sich quer durch Benjamins Schriften zieht und nicht zuletzt das Kind in dunklen Zeiten als eine den Lesenden überantwortete Denkfigur hervortreten lässt.

Gaps and the Creation of Ideas: An Artist’s Book is a portrait of the space between things, whether they be neurons, quotations, comic-book frames, or fragments in a collage. This twenty-year project is an artist’s book that juxtaposes quotations and images from hundreds of artists and writers with the author’s own thoughts. Using Adobe InDesign® for composition and layout, the author has structured the book to show analogies among disparate texts and images. There have always been gaps, but a focus on the space between things is virtually synonymous with modernity. Often characterized as a break, modernity is a story of gaps. Around 1900, many independent strands of gap thought and experience interacted and interwove more intricately. Dissecting the radical impact of Walter Benjamin on contemporary cultural, postcolonial and translation theory, this book investigates the translation and reception of Benjamin's most famous text about translation, The Task of the Translator, in English language debates around 'cultural translation'. For years now, there has been a pronounced interest in translation throughout the Humanities, which has come with an increasing detachment of translation from linguistic-textual parameters. It has generated a broad spectrum of discussions subsumed under the heading of 'cultural translation', a concept that is constantly re-invented and manifests in often heavily diverging expressions. However, there seems to be a distinct constant: In their own (re-)formulations of this concept, a remarkable number of scholars-Bhabha, Chow, Niranjana, to name but a few-explicitly refer to Walter Benjamin's The Task of the Translator. In its first part, this book considers Benjamin and the way in which he thought about, theorized and practiced translation throughout his writings. In a second part, Walter Benjamin meets 'cultural translation': tracing various paths of translation and reception, this part also tackles the issues and debates that result from the omnipresence of Walter Benjamin in contemporary theories and discussions of 'cultural translation'. Benjamin G. Kohl (1938-2010) taught at Vassar College from 1966 till his retirement as Andrew W. Mellon Professor of the Humanities in 2001. His doctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University was directed by Frederic C. Lane, and his principal historical interests focused on northern Italy during the Renaissance, especially on Padua and Venice. His scholarly production includes the volumes Padua under the Carrara, 1318-1405 (1998), and Culture and Politics in Early Renaissance Padua (2001), and the online database The Rulers of Venice, 1332-1524 (2009). The database is eloquent testimony of his priority attention to historical sources and to their accessibility, and also of his enthusiasm for collaboration and sharing among scholars.
