This study presents a detailed analysis of the flow topologies and turbulence scales in the jet-in-cross-flow experiment of [Su and Mungal JFM 2004]. The analysis is performed using the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) technique with a highly resolved grid and time-step and well controlled boundary conditions. This enables quantitative agreement with the first and second moments of turbulence statistics measured in the experiment. LES is used to perform the analysis since experimental measurements of time-resolved 3D fields are still in their infancy and because sampling periods are generally limited with direct numerical simulation. A major focal point is the comprehensive characterization of the turbulence scales and their evolution. Time-resolved probes are used with long sampling periods to obtain maps of the integral scales, Taylor microscales, and turbulent kinetic energy spectra. Scalar-fluctuation scales are also quantified. In the near-field, coherent structures are clearly identified, both in physical and spectral space. Along the jet centerline, turbulence scales grow according to a classical one-third power law. However, the derived maps of turbulence scales reveal strong inhomogeneities in the flow. From the modeling perspective, these insights are useful to design optimized grids and improve numerical predictions in similar configurations.

Numerical calculation of a three dimensional turbulent flow of a jet in a crossflow using a multiple time scale turbulence model is presented. The turbulence in the forward region of the jet is in a stronger inequilibrium state than that in the wake region of the jet, while the turbulence level in the wake region is higher than that in the front region. The calculated flow and the concentration fields are in very good agreement with the measured data, and it indicated that the turbulent transport of mass, concentration, and momentum is strongly governed by the inequilibrium turbulence. Measurements and computations are reported for the flow of a turbulent jet discharging into a crossflow confined between two parallel plates. For jet-to-crossflow velocity ratios R equal to 2 and 4, mean and fluctuating velocity components are measured by a laser Doppler anemometer. High order statistics of the streamwise velocity and its time derivative have been measured in the plane of symmetry of a jet in a confined crossflow. The existence of universal similarity of the fine scale structure of a developing turbulent velocity field and the validity of original Kolmogorov local similarity theory and later formulations were investigated. Construction of normalized spectral for energy content, dissipation, and higher order moments enable an examination of the Reynolds number dissipation, and higher order moments enable an examination of the Reynolds number dependence of these functions for the Re sub lamda range from 16 to 800. Estimates of the Kolmogorov constant, mu, ranging from 0.27 to 0.43 were obtained with the arithmetic average equal to 0.38. The fractal dimension of the fine scale structure was estimated from the functional relationship between the flatness of the velocity time derivative and Re sub lambda. For unfiltered data, the fractal dimension was estimated to be 2.45. However, with a + or - 12 sigma bandwidth, the fractal dimension increased to 2. 73.

The development of any inhomogeneous free-turbulence flow in an incompressible fluid is predicted through the use of a general self-preservation hypothesis. The analytical solutions are verified by comparison with experimental data on mean-flow and turbulence characteristics of plane and axisymmetric jets in coaxial parallel flow with and without confinement, of an axisymmetric jet in a cross flow, and of the wake behind a self-propelled body. Emphasis is placed on the distinct turbulence structure of the various flows as revealed by the different axial variations of a shear parameter relating turbulence shear to mean velocity. The satisfactory predictions obtained by the new approach make it appear to have a more general application (e.g., to plumes and wall jets) than the examples chosen might imply. (Author).

A jet in cross flow (JICF) is examined experimentally by injecting a stream of air into crossing fluid with an aim into quantifying entrainment process and downstream evolution. The behavior of JICF is important to fields ranging from turbine-blade cooling to smokestack pollution and volcanic eruption dynamics. Existing simplified volcanic plume models are tested; most importantly, the near-field contributions of complex interconnected vortex systems, which present significant uncertainties because they assume negligible turbulence. While jets in irrotational cross-flow have been investigated, this analysis has focused on the interaction between a turbulent jet in low and highly turbulent cross-flow created by an active grid. Instantaneous velocity fields were collected over seven planes using particle image velocimetry (PIV). A center-plane (x-y) and six planes parallel to the floor (x-z) highlight the interaction and resulting vortex systems. Various jet-to-cross-flow velocity ratios, Rv, were collected for each plane, which allow for computation of mean statistics and Reynolds stresses. Analysis was focused in five stages: a) identification of differences in the development of the jet across various inflow conditions, b) analysis of the vortex systems through transport and critical points analysis, c) decomposition of the flow structures to identify and remove the highest-order contributions to turbulence kinetic energy and d) extraction of reduced order modeling closure terms and e) optimization of closure terms for the simplified one-dimensional model, Plumeria. These five stages provided a comprehensive description of the role of cross-flow turbulence on the development of JICF. Noteworthy findings include significant changes in wake recovery and the near-wake recirculation region that impacted near-field entrainment; increased entrainment for high cross-flow turbulence after the collapse of the potential core due to increased engulfment and viscous nibbling between turbulent fluids; the presence of shear layer and wake vortices through critical point analysis; and the absence of entrainment and shear layer expansion near the exit. Most importantly, the negligible entrainment near the exit and impact of small scale turbulent features that must be included for any specific model to yield reasonable predictions is highlighted. By laying the foundation for a more nuanced approach to JICF, it is possible to more precisely summarize the complex features observed in this work through simplified descriptions that can be of benefit to both engineering design and geophysical modeling.
