Il s'agit d'une conversation en quatre temps réalisé par des psychanalystes avec le compositeur Pascal Dupasin. Le principe d'un tel ouvrage était pour nous, psychanalystes, la possibilité d'apprendre sur la façon dont un compositeur majeur de sa génération parvient à transmettre de manière exceptionnelle ce qui préside à sa création musicale. En particulier, l'application du compositeur à dire, et non à expliquer, "ce quelque chose d'avant la musique", cette "part confuse, celle où nous ignorons" qu'il désigne aussi comme "l'innommable" au principe de la composition et qui rencontre, au plus près, l'objet de la psychanalyse. Des entretiens successifs se sont organisés, d'abord autour de la question du flux, puis du temps, de la trace et enfin de l'inconscient. A ceux-là s'ajoute une série d'études à partir de la psychanalyse, non pour l'appliquer à la musique ou à la création mais pour mettre au travail ce que Pascal Dusapin peut apporter à celle- ci. C'est la voie joycienne que Jacques Lacan emprunta pour serrer le réel en jeu dans la psychanalyse, à partir de l'acte créateur lui-même. "Composer est un acte, un acte vivant" disait Pascal Dusapin lors de sa Leçon inaugurale au Collège de France. L'audace du compositeur, la distance qu'il prend par rapport au savoir déjà institué, celui de ses maîtres, cette liberté inouïe, s'entend dans chacun de ces entretiens. Le souci de maintenir une parole porteuse de nouveauté rencontre celui de Jacques Lacan qui savait arracher la psychanalyse à son repli dans le sommeil de l'orthodoxie.

This book analyses the dynamic relationship between art and subjective consciousness, following a phenomenological, pragmatist and enactive approach. It brings out a new approach to the role of the body in art, not as a speculative object or symbolic material but as the living source of the imaginary. It contains theoretical contributions and case studies taken from various artistic practices (visual art, theatre, literature and music), Western and Eastern, the latter concerning China, India and Japan. These contributions allow us to nourish the debate on embodied cognition and aesthetics, using theory–philosophy, art history, neuroscience–and the authors’ personal experience as artists or spectators. According to the Husserlian method of “reduction” and pragmatist introspection, they postulate that listening to bodily sensations–cramps, heartbeats, impulsive movements, eye orientation–can unravel the thread of subconscious experience, both active and affective, that emerge in the encounter between a subject and an artwork, an encounter which, following John Dewey, we deem to be a case study for life in general. Ce livre analyse la relation dynamique entre l’art et la conscience subjective, selon une approche phénoménologique, pragmatiste et enactive. Il vise à faire émerger une nouvelle approche du rôle du corps dans l’art, non pas comme objet spéculatif ou matériau symbolique, mais comme source vivante de l’imaginaire. Les contributions théoriques et les études de cas sont prises à diverses pratiques artistiques (arts visuels, théâtre, littérature et musique), occidentales et orientales, ces dernières concernant la Chine, l’Inde et le Japon. Selon la méthode husserlienne de « réduction », en écho à l’introspection pragmatiste, les textes témoignent que l’écoute des sensations corporelles – crampes, battements de cœur, mouvements pulsionnels, orientation des yeux – mises en jeu par l’œuvre, permet de dénouer le fil de l’expérience inconsciente, à la fois kinesthésique et affective, qui émerge dans la rencontre entre un sujet et une œuvre d’art, une rencontre comprise, à la manière de Dewey, comme un cas d’école de la vie en général.

The Violence of Modernity turns to Charles Baudelaire, one of the most canonical figures of literary modernism, in order to reclaim an aesthetic legacy for ethical inquiry and historical critique. Works of modern literature are commonly theorized as symptomatic responses to the trauma of history. In a climate that tends to privilege crisis over critique, Debarati Sanyal argues that it is urgent to rethink literary experience in terms that recall its contestatory potential. Examining Baudelaire's poems afresh, she shifts the focus of critical attention toward an account of modernism as an active engagement with violence, specifically the violence of history in nineteenth-century France. Sanyal analyzes a literary current that uses the traditional hallmarks of modernism—irony, intertextuality, self-reflexivity, and formalism—to challenge the historical violence of modernity. Baudelaire and the committed ironists writing in his wake teach us how to read and resist the violence of history, and thereby to challenge the melancholy tenor of our contemporary "wound culture." In a series of provocative readings, Sanyal presents Baudelaire's poetry as an aesthetic form that contests historical violence through rhetorical strategies of complicity, counterviolence, and critique. The book develops a new account of Baudelaire's significance as a modernist by dislodging him both from his traditional status as a practitioner of "art for art's sake" and from his more recent incarnation as the poet of trauma. Following her extended analysis of Baudelaire's poetry, Sanyal in later chapters considers a number of authors influenced by his strategies—including Rachilde, Virginie Despentes, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre—to examine the relevance of their interventions for our current climate of trauma and terror. The result is a study that underscores how Baudelaire's legacy continues to energize literary engagements with the violence of modernity.

The question of diachrony has been an outgoing preoccupation of Andre Green throughout his psychoanalytic career. It was at the center of the debates during the era of structuralism and opened up a range of issues for psychoanalysis. These included the question of primal experience (phantasies and key-signifiers, Lacan) and repetition, discovered belatedly by Freud but destined to play a major role. Recollection, a central theme in the early days of psychoanalysis, is now seen in the context of its relation to repetition compulsion. The memories to be rediscovered during treatment are less important than the signs of temporality involved. The illusion of completely lifting infantile amnesia has given way to constructions in analysis. Historical truth, which is based on the beliefs organizing the psyche, is contrasted with material truth stripped of any embellishment.
