David Ogilvy has spent more than a full working life in aviation. As a schoolboy he was sent out with a bugle and binoculars to blow a warning if a V1 ?ying bomb appeared. Soon after this, he joined the Royal Air Force and served for six years as a pilot, ?ying types ranging from the Tiger Moth to the Mosquito and Meteor. As a civilian he spent fourteen years involved in pilot training and became Chief Instructor of the Air Schools group, with responsibility for three establishments. He was a keen display and racing pilot and competed in many events, ?ying several historic types. At an early age David realised the need for owners and operators of ?yable pre-war machines to have a representative organization to look after their concerns and interests, so, in 1951, when 22 and still serving in the RAF, he was a co-founder of the Vintage Aeroplane Club. He was also a founding member, and now a Vice President, of the Historic Aircraft Association. In 1966 David was appointed general manager of the famous Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden. During this time, he brought in several historic aircraft, including initiating the retrieval of a 1935 Hawker Hind from Afghanistan. He ?ew many of the Collection’s remarkable airplanes, organizing and participating in the displays. As well as outlining his remarkable career, the main focus of this book is on David Ogilvy's descriptions of many of the historic aircraft he helped rescue and preserve and what it was like to be at their controls. It therefore provides a unique compendium of the flying characteristics of a range of historic aircraft for one or two of which, he unashamedly admits, he is possibly the last man alive to have flown. Away from the cockpit, David has been associated with many organizations, including being a founder member of the UK Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, serving for 45 years in the roles of editor, Executive Chairman and President. He is also President of today's Vintage Aircraft Club and is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. David was awarded the OBE ‘for services to aviation’ in I996.

Every 7 minutes, an A380 takes off or lands somewhere in the world...The Airbus was initially designed and developed in order to provide a contender to the Boeing's growing monopoly of the skies in the biggest large-aircraft market in the world. Ambitious in design, the undertaking seemed mammoth. Yet scores of aviation engineers and pilots worked to get the design off the ground and the Airbus in our skies. This double-decker, wide-body, 4 engine jet airliner promised to redefine expectations when it came to commercial flight. Five years on from its launch, Graham Simons provides us with this, an impressively illustrated narrative history of the craft, its achievements, and the legacy it looks set to provide to a new generation of aviation engineers, enthusiasts and passengers.Operated by airlines such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Quantas and Lufthansa, the story of the A380 could be said to represent the story of modern-day travel itself, characterised by major technological advances across the world that constantly push the boundaries of expectation. Sure to appeal broadly across the market, this is very much a commemorative volume, preserving the history of this iconic craft in words and images.

Excerpt from Aviation in Peace and War Our nation as a whole has been educated, owing to its geographical situation and by tra dition, to interest itself in the broader aspects of marine policy and development. It 'requires to take the same interest in aviation, a comparatively new subject, unhampered to a great extent by preconceived notions and therefore offering greater scope for individual thought. The following 1sketch 1 has been written in the hope that some of those who read it may be inspired to study aviation in one or other of its branches, whether from the historical, technical, strategical, or commercial point of view. Any opinions e pressed are, of course, my own-and not official. I propose first briefly to trace the history of aviation from its beginnings to the outbreak of war; next to describe the evolution of aircraft and of air strategy during the war; and last to estimate the present position and to look into the future. Excerpt from Aircraft: Its Development in War and Peace and Its Commercial Future The object of this book is to explain the fundamental principles of aeronautics and to point out the historic development of both the heavier-than-air and the lighter-than-air craft. The treatment is simple. Tech nical phrases have been avoided wherever possible. Emphasis has been laid on the changes in the design or construction of aeroplanes and dirigibles, which show the evolution of flight and aircraft from early experi ments with balloons and gliders to the transatlantic flights of the N 0-4, the Vickers Vimy Bomber, and the R-34. Only those things have been singled out which indicated a step forward in the science of aero nautics. Emphasis is placed upon the commercial accomplishments of the aeroplane and the dirigible, and many of the present uses and future possibilities of aircraft as a commercial vehicle have been pointed out. Excerpt from The Early History of the Airplane Our tables made the designing of the wings an easy matter, and as screw propellers are simply wings traveling in a spiral course, we anticipated no trouble from this source. We had thought oft getting the theory of the screw-propeller from the marine engineers, and then. By applying our tables Of air-pressures to their formulas, Of designing air-propel lers suitable for our purpose. But so far as we could learn, the marine engineers possessed only empirical formulas, and the exact action Of the screw-propeller.
