Information Structure And Sentence Form written by Knud Lambrecht and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
Why do speakers of all languages use different grammatical structures under different communicative circumstances to express the same idea? Professor Lambrecht explores the relationship between the structure of the sentence and the linguistic and extra-linguistic context in which it is used. His analysis is based on the observation that the structure of a sentence reflects a speaker's assumption about the hearer's state of knowledge and consciousness at the time of the utterance. This relationship between speaker assumptions and formal sentence structure is governed by rules and conventions of grammar, in a component called 'information structure'. Four independent but interrelated categories are analysed: presupposition and assertion, identifiability and activation, topic, and focus.

In this memorial volume for A. Ronald Walton, cutting-edge scholars interrelate two normally separate domains: the formation of language policy and the improvement of language teaching. Bernard Spolsky, Elana Shohamy, Joshua Fishman, and Kees de Bot address theoretical aspects of national language policy. John Trim relates the historical development of the Council of Europe’s international language policy. Richard Lambert, Ronald Walton, Richard Brecht, and Xueying Wang deal with structural issues in language instruction in the United States. Eleanor Jorden, Galal Walker, Myriam Met, and Gilbert Merkx discuss the special problems of providing instruction in the non-Western languages. And Michael Long, Ross Steele, Ralph Ginsberg and Laura Miller are concerned with specific pedagogical issues: task-based language teaching, the role of culture in language instruction, and what is learned during study abroad. These articles stand both as definitive statements on their individual topics and, taken together, as a fresh amalgamation of policy and pedagogy.

This comprehensive introduction presents the fundamental topics and issues of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in 14 chapters. Integrating both profound theoretical and creative practical considerations, the central principles and competence domains of modern foreign language teaching are discussed. Starting with the main classroom agents (teachers and learners), the chapters outline a variety of content areas (language, literature, cultural issues) and thoroughly review materials, media and methods. Additional chapters are concerned with the historical development of English language teaching, its current institutional organisation as well as assessment and evaluation.
