Death is a whisper in the Anglo-Saxon world. But on a remote island, off the coast of County Mayo, it has a louder voice. The local radio station runs a thrice-daily roll-call of the recently departed. The islanders keep vigil with the corpse and share in the sorrow of the bereaved. The living and the dead are bound together in the oldest rite of humanity. In My Father's Wake, Kevin Toolis gives an intimate, eye-witness account of the death and wake of his father, celebrating the spiritual depth of the Irish Wake and asking if we too can find a better way to deal with our mortality, by living and loving in the acceptance of death.

As the author states that her book "...is about courage, too, about the out-and-out courage to claim what is rightfully yours, to recognize it, to dig in your heels, and never give away to anyone what is yours, your home, your motherland, your heart, your right to walk with your head held high.... The author calls her novel Daughter part of the war effort. The heroine absorbs both what I (the Author) personally experienced and the experiences of many of the combatants, military volunteers, and displaced people whom fate brought together. She has become a 'stronghold' for many people. 'We shall live' says the heroine. 'Indeed, we shall!' I reply." from the Foreword by Tamara DudaThis book surely will become a classic of war fiction and war journalism and a landmark for our understanding of what is happening in Ukraine today.Howard Aster discovered this book at the Lviv Literary Festival in late September 2021. On Friday, February 25th, 2022, that infamous day when Ukrainians woke up to the reality of the Russian war against them, the Publisher and the Author desperately made the English language book available to Mosaic Press with the hope that the world would better understand the terror of this continuing Russian war against Ukrainians. There is a powerful and courageous story here, about an author and how she wrote this book, how the book was published in Ukraine by a fearless small Ukrainian publisher and how it is now made available to English language readers.

"An unforgettable story of trauma and healing, told in achingly beautiful prose with great tenderness and care." —#1 New York Times-bestselling author Karen M. McManus When two teens discover that they were both sexually assaulted at the same party, they develop a cautious friendship through her family’s possibly-magical pastelería, his secret forest of otherworldly trees, and the swallows returning to their hometown, in Anna-Marie McLemore's The Mirror Season. Graciela Cristales’ whole world changes after she and a boy she barely knows are assaulted at the same party. She loses her gift for making enchanted pan dulce. Neighborhood trees vanish overnight, while mirrored glass appears, bringing reckless magic with it. And Ciela is haunted by what happened to her, and what happened to the boy whose name she never learned. But when the boy, Lock, shows up at Ciela’s school, he has no memory of that night, and no clue that a single piece of mirrored glass is taking his life apart. Ciela decides to help him, which means hiding the truth about that night. Because Ciela knows who assaulted her, and him. And she knows that her survival, and his, depend on no one finding out what really happened.

To a regular passerby, the ship seemed as if it was a lonesome thing, abandoned and forgotten. The disarray of normally taut lines and sheets that hung loosely from their spars suggested the ship had been inactive and somewhat neglected. A traditionally active sailing vessel, normally full of human activity, was now quiet and dormant, aching for action and people to occupy her decks. The wind from the busy harbor whistled by her wooden masts and through her hundreds of lines making an eerie sound. The gentle rocking of the ship creaked in unison as the waves lapped against the wharf’s old wooden piers. The Defiant waited. Soon there would be an opportunity.

Malicious Deceivers written by Ioana B. Jucan and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-08 with Social Science categories.

In Malicious Deceivers, Ioana B. Jucan traces a genealogy of post-truth intimately tied to globalizing modernity and connects the production of repeatable fakeness with capitalism and Cartesian metaphysics. Through case studies that cross times and geographies, the book unpacks the notion of fakeness through the related logics of dissimulation (deception) and simulation (performativity) as seen with software/AI, television, plastics, and the internet. Specifically, Jucan shows how these (dis)simulation machines and performative objects construct impoverished pictures of the world, ensuring a repeatable sameness through processes of hollowing out embodied histories and lived experience. Through both its methodology and its subjects-objects of study, the book further seeks ways to counter the abstracting mode of thinking and the processes of voiding performed by the twinning of Cartesian metaphysics and global capitalism. Enacting a model of creative scholarship rooted in the tradition of writing as performance, Jucan, a multimedia performance-maker and theater director, uses the embodied "I" as a framing and situating device for the book and its sites of investigation. In this way, she aims to counter the Cartesian voiding of the thinking "I" and to enact a different kind of relationship between self and world from the one posited by Descartes and replayed in much Western philosophical and — more broadly — academic writing: a relationship of separation that situates the "I" on a pedestal of abstraction that voids it of its embodied histories and fails to account for its positionality within a socio-historical context and the operations of power that define it.
