Excerpt from Folk-Dances and Singing Games: Twenty-Six Folk-Dances of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia The actual steps and figures of a folk-dance are far more easily described than its real essence - atmosphere - spirit. One may be fairly sure that the spirit of the dance is caught if the dancers laugh from sheer pleasure in the dance itself. The most practical suggestions I can make for catching the spirit of a dance are these: - 1. Have a musician who can feel the folk quality of the music and express it with charm and irresistible rhythm. 2. Pay particular attention to the expression-marks and metronome tempi of the music. 3. Pay particular attention to the instructions, given in almost every description, in regard to the general character, meaning and spirit of the dance. Intercourse with people of other countries has given me what knowledge I possess of their dances. I wish it were possible to express to every one of these people all my thanks for the pleasure and benefit which I have derived from their friendship. Excerpt from Swedish Folk Dances Thus the folk dance has come to signify the revival of the expression of old fundamental rural impulses, pure and lovely as the sunshine of the fields. The general European revival and our own use of the folk dance is an expres sion of this deep-rooted longing. In New York City dancing has taken its legitimate place in the education and recreation of the children in the schools. There the dances have lightened the formal gymnastics with a natural interest, and have returned large values in a normal joyous expression of fundamental impulses. Excerpt from Dances of the People: A Second Volume of Folk-Dances and Singing Games; Containing Twenty-Seven Folk-Dances of England, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland My interest in dancing has been from the standpoint of its possibilities as a form of self expression and play rather than as a means of showing off for the benefit of the onlooker. There are two distinct and very different kinds of pleasure to be found in dancing, and their effects on the dancers are equally distinct and different. One is the pure joy of the dance itself; the other is a combination of self - consciousness and appetite for applause. We cannot hope to dictate to adults, but for children we can and should with care and intelligence choose dances which appeal to the instinct for play and for self-expression. It is here that we can turn to folk-dances and know that we are on safe ground, for they are spontaneous, genuine and sincere. They are the wild flowers of the dance world, unspoiled by the hand of man. They have sprung naturally from the hearts of simple, wholesome country folk in response to the human need for self-expression. Excerpt from Dances of Norway Our old Norse literature consisted of Edda-kvaede, Eddic poems; later the Skalds or bards found themes in sagas and lays, using alliteration and reciting their poems at feasts before kings and Chieftains. Nothing, however, suggests that either song or dance was attached to these spoken verses, though, in form, there are certain points of resemblance between these skaldic poems and our oldest dance ballads. The real song-dance came With the ballad, or what in Eng land and France became the Carole, known all over Western Europe in Court, castle and village. Icelandic sources give us some information from as early as I I I 9 about this medie val dance form and we may suppose that it reached Norway about the same time or a little earlier. The age of chivalry created good conditions for this artistic, polite form in which both sexes could take part and which either a man or a woman might lead; as it grew in popularity the reign of the old skald and the reciter of sagas came to an end. Through the song-dance our ballads won a popularity no other poetry has gained. Alliteration was dropped, rhymes took its place and lyrical stanzas became a vehicle for dance. Excerpt from Folk Dances for Young People; With Explanatory Text, Diagrams and Photographic Illustrations: Adapted for the Use of Schools, Playgrounds and Other Organizations of Children in the United States The song-dances in this book are adapted to American needs from Swedish, Danish and Norwegian originals. The words are translated as closely as exigencies of meter Will allow. The airs are well Within the limited compass of children's voices. The people with whom these song-dances originated, some dances dating as far back as the sixteenth century, use only the melody, occasionally assisted by a fiddle or an accordion; but to meet the demands of the American school, a tuneful piano accompaniment is added. The original text is published by Prof. O. Helgren, principal of the public schools in Filip stad and a member of the faculty of the College at Naas, Sweden. Thither go young women from many countries, for instruction in scientific physical training. Prof. Helgren posed Swedish school-children for the pictures in this book and the dia grams to illustrate the dances have his approval. Never was the primitive love of dancing stronger than now. In dancing, as in music and literature, a sound taste is best assured when the cultivation of it begins early. Any dance in this book is suitable for children's entertainment; they are instructive, wholesome and sweet. This collection of song-dances, the most complete ever published, will be found useful in public and private schools as a pleasant addition to the regular courses in physical training, play-grounds and school-centers in general.
