Da troppo tempo la ricerca semiotica si è arroccata in un accademismo che si è alla lunga rivelato tanto patetico quanto sterile, attirando non poche perplessità e comprensibili riprovazioni. La misurazione è il processo fondamentale attraverso il quale possiamo migliorare la conoscenza del mondo che ci circonda. Hitherto, there has been no book that attempted to sum up the breadth of Umberto Eco’s work and it importance for the study of semiotics, communication and cognition. There have been anthologies and overviews of Eco’s work within Eco Studies; sometimes, works in semiotics have used aspects of Eco’s work. Yet, thus far, there has been no overview of the work of Eco in the breadth of semiotics. This volume is a contribution to both semiotics and Eco studies. The 40 scholars who participate in the volume come from a variety of disciplines but have all chosen to work with a favorite quotation from Eco that they find particularly illustrative of the issues that his work raises. Some of the scholars have worked exegetically placing the quotation within a tradition, others have determined the (epistemic) value of the quotation and offered a critique, while still others have seen the quotation as a starting point for conceptual developments within a field of application. However, each article within this volume points toward the relevance of Eco -- for contemporary studies concerning semiotics, communication and cognition.

Con la sua esigenza di un ritorno alle «cose stesse», la fenomenologia husserliana si è sempre proposta di esibirne la costituzione, ovvero la fondazione. In questo modo ha preso coscienza di sé come nuova «filosofia prima» recante il principio di una legittimazione assoluta della conoscenza fenomenologica. Cosa legittima quest’ultima tanto rispetto ai dati attestati da un procedimento puramente descrittivo quanto alla loro origine negli atti della soggettività trascendentale? Questo libro intende ripensare tale questione alla sua radice: è con l’obiettivo di realizzare il progetto di legittimazione assoluta della costituzione del senso dei fenomeni che Husserl procede – oltrepassando i limiti di una fenomenologia descrittiva – a delle costruzioni fenomenologiche che non sono costruzioni speculative, ma «sistemi di coordinate» che il fenomenologo deve introdurre per rendere conto di questo o quel contenuto fenomenologico. I fondamenti di una fenomenologia costruttiva avranno dunque come scopo di chiarire lo statuo di ciò che si presenta al fenomenologo nelle sue analisi concrete – il che implica un approccio in cui sovente, per la natura stessa della «cosa», «ci mancheranno i nomi».
