Excerpt from Food Habits of Some Winter Bird Visitants The lar e beak and the contrasting plumage of yellow, black, and white maie the evening grosbeak an easily recognized species. Breeding in the western United States and Canada, during the winter it is occasionally seized with a wandering impulse which carries it east to New York, Pennsylvania, and adjacent States. Usually, however, it chooses to spend this season in the West, wandering over the country in flocks of varying numbers. For the study of the food habits of this grosbeak, 127 stomachs collected in 14 States and Canada were available. Of these 88 were taken in the winter months (october to March, inclusive), or at the time when the birds commonly appear about human habitations. The remaining 39 were taken in summer. Winter food. - Ornithologists who have been fortunate enough to observe this interesting bird report that the chief elements in the diet are various kinds of wild fruit, seeds of ash, maple, box elder, and conifers, and buds. Except for this last item these observa tions are verified by stomach examination. No buds were found in the stomachs, and this seems to indicate that the bud-eating habit is not so general as has been supposed. It is worthy of note that about 50 stomachs taken in Ontario in the winter of 1889 - 90, and examined by various members of the Canadian Institute, contained no buds.2 It was found that seeds of several different trees and shrubs constituted the food supply of the birds while they re mained in that locality. Excerpt from The Winter Bird-Life of Minnesota: Being an Annotated List of Birds That Have Been Found Within the State of Minnesota During the Winter Months The only opportunity to become acquainted with the handsome and little-known Evening Grosbeak, its relative the Pine Grosbeak, the ele gant northern Waxwing, or the more common but little less interesting Red-poll Linnet, Sno-w Bunting and Lapland Long'spur, is during their sojourn here as visitors from their far northern summer homes. Then too, the greatly altered conditions under which all our birds must live during the season of cold and snow present an entirely new field for study and observation. An acquaintance with the needs and habits of these birds during the time of their greatest stress will make it possible for those so inclined to do much to assist and protect them by furnishing suitable shelter and food. So the winter-time has its peculiar rewards. Its delights and its satisfactions for the bird student, though it is true the difficulties to be overcome are much greater and the harvest much less abundant than in the rich and glorious spring and summer time. This classic and widely influential work brings together the talents of the greatest American ornithologist of his generation (Coues), a pioneering nature writer/editor/ornithologist (Wright), and a young artist whose contribution to the American tradition of bird illustration proved to be second only to Audubon's own (Fuertes); this book features the first substantial body of his work. Directed at the general public, especially children, and written in an entertaining and fanciful fiction style, the work imparts solid scientific knowledge while inculcating conservation values. It exemplifies the extensive literature of popular yet scientifically-grounded ornithology which nurtured the national passion for birds in this era, thereby fostering some of conservationism's most vital and widespread grass roots. Women were particularly well-represented in this literature, often--like Wright--combining literary gifts with serious scientific knowledge (Wright was elected to membership in the American Ornithologists' Union) to bridge the widening gap between professional science and amateur nature-study, and often--as in this work--confirming contemporary expectations of gender roles by directing their writings particularly toward children.

Himalayan birds inhabit what is perhaps the most wonderful tract of country in the world. The Himalayas are not so much a chain of mountains as a mountainous country, some eighty miles broad and several hundred long-a country composed entirely of mountains and valleys with no large plains or broad plateaux. The avifauna of the Himalayas is a large one. It includes birds found throughout the range, birds confined to the eastern or western portions, birds resident all through the year, birds that are mere seasonal visitors, birds found only at high elevations, birds confined to the lower hills, birds abundant everywhere, birds nowhere common.

There are 10,500 species of bird worldwide and wherever they occur people marvel at their glorious colours and their beautiful songs. We also trap and consume birds of every kind. Yet birds have not just been good to eat. Their feathers, which keep us warm or adorn our costumes, give birds unique mastery over the heavens. Throughout history their flight has inspired the human imagination so that birds are embedded in our religions, folklore, music and arts. Vast in both scope and scale, Birds and People explores and celebrates this relationship and draws upon Mark Cocker’s 40 years of observing and thinking about birds. Part natural history and part cultural study, it describes and maps the entire spectrum of our engagements with birds, drawing in themes of history, literature, art, cuisine, language, lore, politics and the environment. In the end, this is a book as much about us as it is about birds. Birds and People has been stunningly illustrated by one of Europe’s best wildlife photographers, David Tipling, who has travelled in 39 countries on seven continents to produce a breathtaking and unique collection of photographs. The book is as important for its visual riches as it is for its groundbreaking content. Birds and People is also exceptional in that the author has solicited contributions from people worldwide. Personal anecdotes and stories have come from more than 650 individuals in 81 different countries. They range from university academics to Mongolian eagle hunters, and from Amerindian shamans to some of the most celebrated writers of our age. The sheer multitude of voices in this global chorus means that Birds and People is both a source book on why we cherish birds and a powerful testament to their importance for all humanity.

Current Ornithology publishes authoritative, up-to-date, scholarly reviews of topics selected from the full range of current research in avian biology. Topics cover the spectrum from the molecular level of organization to population biology and community ecology. The series seeks especially to review (1) fields in which an abundant recent literature will benefit from synthesis and organization, or (2) newly emerging fields that are gaining recognition as the result of recent discoveries or shifts in perspective, or (3) fields in which students of vertebrates may benefit from comparisons of birds with other classes. All chapters are invited, and authors are chosen for their leadership in the subjects under review.
