Although it is unlikely that any of the stories contained in this book will ever be as well-known as Banjo Patterson's Bush Christening, or that the author will ever reach the notoriety of the whisky flask tossing preacher, the stuff Banjo Patterson's poem is made of is very much the context and content of ministry in general but especially of that which one finds in the Outback. The small collection of stories offered in this book will hopefully be a resource for personal reflection and a pathway into thinking about how some of our stories can help us to think more about the church in remote and isolated communities. These stories take the reader on a journey into what ministry in the Australian Outback can look like, and through moments of comedy, seriousness, surprise, tragedy and personal spiritual growth, lead the reader in an exploration of the essence of ministry that is, a life that is focused on the other and flows out of one which is lived with God and a commitment to follow Christ. Author Bio: Jorge was ordained as a Uniting Church Minister in 2009 and previously was a Lay Pastor since 2007. He has been a congregational minister, the Academic Registrar at United Theological College, and was the Synod of NSW & ACT Consultant for the Specified Ministry of Pastor. Included among Jorge's most recent positions is the "Flying Padre" role based in the Broken Hill Patrol of Frontier Services where he flew a Cessna 182 and pastorally cared for people on isolated properties, and supplied chaplaincy for schools, prisons and mines. He is presently chaplain with UnitingCare Ageing and has pastoral responsibility for over 200 people over two facilities. Jorge is married to Susan and has four children, Jonathan, David, April and Olivia.

To Hell and High Water tells the story of the quest of two brothers to conquer the extreme conditions of outback Australia, recreating the Bourke to Hungerford 'tramp' that influenced some of Australian literary legend Henry Lawson's greatest works. The book is part autobiography and part biography. It is an autobiography of the author's experiences with his brother overcoming significant obstacles to achieve his dream of walking in Lawson's footsteps. It paints a vivid picture of some of Australia's most remote country, the challenges and dangers, the heat, the distance, mosquitoes, blisters and thirst. At the same time it blends in the biography of Henry Lawson's captivating life including his marriage, struggles with alcoholism, his suicide attempt, influences upon his writing and his ideals of mateship. Extracts of Lawson's own writing have been carefully selected and woven into the narrative in a manner that draws parallels between the two experiences and offers fresh insights into his life.

Jane Grieve was born and raised on a farm on the Darling Downs in Queensland. She grew up with the wind in her hair and the rich black Darling Downs soil between her barefoot toes, her vivid imagination captivated by the tales of her Colonial forebears and the romantic notion of Australia's outback. From the outset she was determined that her life was not going to run along conventional lines; and nor did it. While working for architect Bill Durack, brother of legendary Australian identities Mary and Elizabeth Durack, she met R.M. Williams. R.M. exhorted her to work with him, Hugh Sawrey, Mary Durack, Bob Katter Snr, Ranald Chandler, Sir James Walker and other prominent Australians to build a very special monument. This is the previously untold story of the establishment of one of Australia's foremost Bicentennial projects - the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre - at Longreach in Queensland. Told through the eyes of a person whose role in the inner sanctum was pivotal to its success, it is an extraordinary true story of the legendary identities, selfless determination and sheer hard work involved in the creation of what was intended as a Mecca for all Australians.

Arthur Meehan lived and dreamed the development of a cattle station in the Murchison area of Western Australia. His wife Kit Murphy tried to support him and build a family in the Outback of the North West. This is their life as seen by one of their five daughters - a story of love and tragedy, success and misfortune, light-hearted fun and total misery, the good and the bad of the rural heart of Australia. Virginia Meehan has a vivid recall of her childhood years, first on Mt Vernon station in the Murchison and then on Hillside Station in the Pilbara when circumstances forced the family to start again. Her memories include living through the radioactive fallout of the Monte Bello atomic tests, the effects of 'the alone' on the mental health of outback people and the tragedies when all they could do was not enough.

With Dew on my Boots is a rich evocation of the childhood of Colin Thiele, who has delighted generations of Australian children for years. A fascinating account of what it was like to grow up at a particular time and place: the predominately German-speaking farming community of Eudunda, just north of the Barossa Valley, in the 1920s and 30s. With Dew on my Boots is instilled with Colin's characteristic warmth, humour and wisdom. Other Footprints traces moments in Colin’s life beyond the early years. During his many journeys across the length and breadth of Australia with his wife, Rhonda, he delighted in encounters with people of all ages in cities, country towns and ‘microscopic dots on outback maps’, as well as with wildlife and the land itself.
