Excerpt from History of the New World Called America, Vol. 1 The writer has been sparing in making corrections in the received etymology of American names but the start ling absurdity which marks the current explanations of some important ones, such as Titicaca, Cuzco, and Mexico, has led him to indicate what he believes to be their true meaning (pp. 295, 405, which is in each case based upon some early authority. In the case of Mexico, the name appears to be one among several indications of a previous occupation of the site by the Otomi aborigines the derivation from the Otomi me/te (a spring) is founded upon an explicit statement twice made by Gomara, who undoubtedly had good authority for making it 1. Excerpt from My First Trip to the New World IN presenting to the public this little volume, I feel I am supplying a want felt by many, viz., a short description of a tract of country which far surpasses in the grandeur of its scenery most other places. Few, indeed, who have not heard of the Falls of Niagara, or read of the rapids of the St. Lawrence, the mighty forests of North America, and the vast plains, the Splendid rivers, and the beautiful lakes with which the Western World abounds. But to single out an account of each particular place from the various authors who have written on the subject, would be a task not within the reach of many; and I know of no work published in this country that contains an account of the places which I have in this little work endeavoured to describe. Before I left England for the United States, I was anxious to obtain some information respecting the tour I proposed to take, but after searching in vain through many libraries, I had to content myself with proceeding to America in ignorance of those places I felt a desire to become acquainted with. Excerpt from The New World The New World is One World and each inhabitant of it, Wherever he may live, is responsible, accord ing as God has prospered him, in some measure for the whole of it. Long time the Western Hemisphere had been hidden from those who knew of Christ and His liberating Gospel. At length God guided the Wise man from Genoa across the unplumbed seas and the New World was found - and that new world, mind you, was not North America, nor South America, but the Americas. Excerpt from History of the New World Called America, Vol. 2 I Probably also on the shores of the great 'moxos Lake, ' which Colonel G. E. Church, in his Presidential Address in the Geographical Section at the meeting of the British Association, 1898, shows to have once existed to the north of the ancient Mediterranean Sea of South America. During four months of the year this lake still partially reappears, covering square miles with water which cannot hnd an exit over the falls of the Madeira river, these falls not being yet sufliciently worn down to give complete drainage to the Moxos basin. The partial disappearance of this lake and the total disappearance of the Argentine sea, Which must have been almost tideless, are due to an upheaval of the earth's crust, so recent that the shells found in the ancient beaches still retain their colour. The plain of Argentina is believed to be still slowly rising; and some part of this vanished sea may well have existed in comparatively recent times - from to years ago. Excerpt from The Homes of the New World, Vol. 2 of 3: Impressions of America AT length, my sweet little Agatha, I have a moment's calm in which to converse with you; but it has been hard to find in this friendly city of the Friends. I left Charleston the fifteenth of this month, over whelmed, as in all other places, with presents, and an infinity of kindness and attentions. But ah how weary and worn out I was during the last days there with the labour of incessant society. Sea-bathing kept me alive, as well as a few hours of rest in the kind house of my friend Mrs. W.
