This significant book, written a few years before his death, presents Ellul's fullest understanding of the meaning of Jesus' life. One finds all of the major themes of Ellul's writings. The first half of this book deals with Jesus' sufferings, which are by no means limited to Good Friday. Through Jesus' identification with "the whole human condition," we are offered the possibility of both enduring and overcoming suffering. Similarly, the temptations are understood beyond the wilderness temptation narrative since Jesus experiences them throughout his ministry. Ellul believes temptations are ultimately human avenues for tempting God, and so focuses on the discussion power and "non-power," be it on personal or political levels. Appropriately, Ellul enters into the passion narrative not simply in the context of suffering but in the context of temptation, where Jesus could have easily "proved his divinity," but chose instead to reveal both the character and way of God.

Although there are many of the scientific laws of nature currently unknown to mankind, he continues to strive to find answers and to reconcile the scientific world of which we are aware using out five senses. What science does not understand, or is unwilling to admit, there is a realm beyond the certainties of this physical realm that is incapable of scientific proof. That realm is called "The Spiritual Realm." Most deny its existence or if they mentally assent to the possibility that such a realm exists they know little about it and certainly don't apply it to their everyday lives or scientific pursuits. Some look on such things as foolishness as the Apostle Paul said: "But a natural [unspiritual] man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised" (1 Corinthians 2:14). However, as this book will attempt to point out, the spirit realm is very much a real place, actually more real than our physical world. The spirit world has its own set of rules and principles that govern it. However its ways are past finding out by the natural mind of man and thus invisible to those without spiritual sight. The Apostle Paul said in the Bible: "because the human mind is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so" (Romans 8:7). Thus our intellect is useless in knowing anything beyond what we can see or touch. Just taking the most basic of the spiritual laws, the 10 commandments for instance, who can argue that we all would be a little better off if everyone was able to follow these basic rules? There would be no crime, therefore no expensive jails to confine criminals. The family unit, which has been broken down in this generation, would stay intact as children would respect their parents; there would be no adultery to break up the family and coveting would all together cease. There would be no serious disparity between the rich and the poor and the poor would be taken care of without great expenditure of funds to do so. For 2000 years, Christians, theologians, scholars and historians have broadly accepted these two designations as describing One Person - Jesus: The Son of God. However, a serious and brutally-logical analysis of the actual Scriptures which pertain to these two Titles, along with connecting Scripture that add irrefutable and clarifying reinforcement to the primary axiom here, clearly show that belief to not be the case at all. To that particular end the clear statement: "No man hath seen God at any time..." irrefutably destroys the singular, supposedly sacrosanct, tenet we allude to. If you, Christian reader, or you, Bible scholar, apply the above reality to certain passages in Revelation concerning "He Who is Enthroned" - and Jesus - then you must surely see that the present general Church interpretation/belief about Who It is that occupies that Throne, cannot possibly be correct. In fact, of all distortions of Biblical Truth - and there are very, very many - this crucial error of The Two Sons of God stands as the most appalling, and therefore the most destructive for all of global humanity, to what Jesus described as the All-Truth. The contentious nature of what we are unequivocally postulating will therefore place this "immutable fact" in direct opposition to the standard and long-held position of global Christendom. That position states that it is Jesus Who is to return, for, - according to Christian wisdom - He is the only Son of God! John 16 holds the warning from Jesus that upon the Coming of the Ordained One, that: "He, Himself, [personal pronoun] will honour Me." And from Jesus: "I return to The Father and you will see Me no more." Are we just playing with words here, and/or are we distorting Bible Scripture? Well, there is, of course, one outcome that will prove our case - the Event itself. An earth-changing Event of which it is warned that: "Only the few will [recognise] know." Not the roughly two billion of global Christendom: No, only the few!
