Effective wildlife conservation requires understanding diet composition and its consequences for population demography. I measured the diet of an at-risk population of Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) in southwestern British Columbia during two breeding seasons using pellets, prey remains, and nest cameras. I compared diet composition across two ecological zones and assessed the impact of dietary diversity and specialization on goshawk productivity. Goshawks consumed 33 different species but primarily consumed pine squirrels (Tamiascuirus spp.), which composed 14-61% of dietary biomass, depending on source. Diet composition differed slightly between the coastal and transition zones. I also conducted a pilot study of goshawk breeding season movement using GPS-UHF transmitters. Male goshawks used more space and travelled further from the nest than female goshawks. While I found no correlation between dietary diversity or specialization on pine squirrels and goshawk productivity, the abundance of this key prey species may affect goshawk productivity and space use.

The northern goshawk is one of the principal members of the forest raptor community that I investigated during graduate studies in the northeastern United States. As a wildlife biologist for Beak Consultants, I also conducted surveys, research, and GIS-habitat modeling on goshawks in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to that work, another part of my job was also to provide expertise on goshawk issues and remain current with the scientific literature on goshawks. After amassing a wealth of information, data, and field experience, it seemed like a natural step to compile this knowledge into a single handy source or reference book for people keenly interested in North American goshawks or raptors in general. While there have been several recent reviews on goshawk biology, I think that this book presents a unique perspective of experience gained from a biologist who has studied goshawks from coast to coast. In addition, one of my strengths as a scientist has been my ability to see the big picture and not get muddled in lengthy debate over minor details. Thus, I feel that this book presents a practical, logical, and holistic approach to the study and conservation of goshawks in North America. More than simply provide another review, I hope that I have synthesized the most critical elements of life history and scientific analyses into a thesis which provides a complete and comprehensive understanding of the goshawk.

Forestry in British Columbia's old-growth forests has reduced critical foraging and breeding habitat for the coastal northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis laingi) and restricted population growth. Now at-risk, efforts to recover this subspecies have focused on establishing suitable habitat and a well-distributed population within the province. However, regional diets and associated dynamics are also critical to goshawk recovery and remain poorly understood. Including a synchronous predator-prey recovery approach to current plans can bridge these knowledge gaps. A new model and methods were developed to translate prey biological requirements into structural surrogate features that could be parameterized and ranked within GIS software. Applying these ranks to known goshawk territories in the South Coast allowed for the visualization and quantification of areas with subpar predicted prey abundances. This provided insight on links between prey and forest structure and can be used to direct future restoration and research decisions for coastal goshawk prey-based recovery.
