Since national security impacts every citizen in India, there is a growing need for a more sophisticated, broad-based and nuanced understanding of the instrument of force in statecraft. Largely confined to the strategic elite and practitioners thus far, a wider national security discourse could generate better ideas to proliferate and morph into better policies, strategies and doctrines. This academic endeavour, the first of its kind from India's National Defence College, seeks to tap the vast operational experience of all the contributors and offers a basic understanding of several important cornerstones of force and war fighting; how they can best be employed in current and future scenarios; and how best they can be synergised for effect. It is a go-to book for policy makers, legislators, diplomats, academics, leadership at various levels in the various national security verticals including the military, media and the curious reader even as India grapples with new and emerging security challenges in a volatile global geopolitical landscape. Air Vice Marshal (Dr) Arjun Subramaniam is the President's Chair of Excellence in National Security Affairs at National Defence College, New Delhi. A retired fighter pilot, military historian and strategic commentator, he is the author of five books, including India's Wars: A Military History: 1947-1971 and its newly-released sequel in two versions titled Full Spectrum: India's Wars 1972-2020 and A Military History of India Since 1972. Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury is the Commandant of the National Defence College, New Delhi, and an alumnus of the Royal College of Defence Studies, UK. A highly experienced and accomplished fighter pilot with vast experience in Air Power at strategic, operational and tactical levels. He is a prolific writer on air power strategy and international security having published chapters in edited volumes and articles in several professional and academic journals.

Force and Statecraft: Diplomatic Challenges of Our Time, Fifth Edition, is a concise historical discussion and insightful analysis of diplomacy. It uniquely combines history, political science, and international law in order to explore how lessons from the rich experience of the past can be brought to bear on the diplomatic challenges that we confront in our world today. This new edition combines the cumulative insights and reflections of three internationally renowned scholars--who have written more than fifty books between them--with an astute, stimulating, and up-to-date treatment of recent global developments. These include American foreign policy, the rise of China, terrorism, weapons of mass destruction in North Korea, and nuclear enrichment in Iran. Significant attention is given to the powerful impact of technology on the "digital revolution," the revolution in military affairs (RMA), drones, eDiplomacy, the "information revolution," cyber security and WikiLeaks, command and control, surveillance and reconnaissance, and social networking sites. This edition also provides a sophisticated and thought-provoking analysis of "hard" and "soft" power, the "invisibility of security," human rights, ethics, law, legitimacy, and the threat and use of force as an instrument of statecraft.

In this classic text, an eminent historian of international affairs and a distinguished political scientist survey the evolution of the international system, from the emergence of the modern state in the 17th century to the present. Craig and George pay particular attention to the nineteenth century's "balance-of-power" system, the basic tenets of which still determine many applications of modern diplomacy. The authors also focus on the ways in which the 20th century diplomatic revolution--a complex of military, political, economic and ideological factors--has destroyed the homogeneity of the international community and confronted diplomats with new problems and the need to find new expedients to deal with them. The revised third edition brings these arguments up to date with expanded chapters, newly-added discussions and case studies, and entirely new material reflecting the altered political landscape of the 1990's, with chapters on the Gulf War, the collaps of communism in Eastern Europe, the reunification of Germany, and the break-up of the Soviet Union. Force and Statecraft remains the standard resource for students in the fields of international relations and diplomatic history.

"This study begins by defining military force in three categories: the threat of force, the active use of force, and signaling. The threat of force includes compellence, which threatens force to change behavior; and deterrence, which threatens force to prevent a behavior. The two active uses of force associated with compellence and deterrence are offense and defense, respectively. In other words, when either of the first two threats of force fail to further US objectives, that threat may be acted upon. Without successfully fulfilling a threat, US coercion strategies lose their influence. The fifth use of force that enables the other four is the calculated display of a state's potential and political will, which will be referred to as "signaling," but is also commonly termed saber-rattling."--Abstract.

"The two most important ordering principles for human society are the political and the religious. In some ways, the history of a society might be viewed as the process by which a community attempts to affirm, through religious and political structures and values, the legitimization of its power and authority. Successive efforts to weave new patterns of legitimization might therefore define the process of change in that society. What happens to a community's ordering of reality when it attempts to redefine its political legitimizing process in terms of its religious orientation? The purpose of this study is to examine this question in the related societies of medieval South India and Sri Lanka"--Book Jacket.

Winner of the Andrew F. Krepinevich Writing Award A 2022 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title Selected for the Irregular Warfare Initiative’s Inaugural Reading List (2022) In today’s complex international environment, how do the United States, China, and Russia manage the return of great power competition as well as the persistent threat of violent non-state actors? This book explores "shaping": the use of military power to construct a more favorable environment by influencing the characteristics of other militaries, altering the relationships between them, or managing the behavior of allies. As opposed to traditional strategies of warfighting or coercion, shaping relies less on threats, demonstrations, and uses of violence and more on attraction, persuasion, and legitimacy. Because shaping relies more on soft power than on hard power, this approach contradicts the conventional wisdom of the purpose militaries serve. Kyle J. Wolfley explores the emergence of shaping in classical strategy and its increased frequency following the end of the Cold War when threats and allies became more ambiguous. He illustrates the four logics of shaping—attraction, socialization, delegation, and assurance—through five case studies of recent major military exercise programs led by the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, and Russia. Moreover, the author reveals through sentiment analysis and statistics of over one thousand multinational exercises from 1980 to 2016 how major powers reacted to a complex international environment by expanding the number and scope of shaping exercises. Illuminating an understudied but surprisingly common tool of military statecraft, this book offers a fresh understanding of military power in today's competitive international system.
