Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 37: December 23, 1938 The official estimate of the Argentine crop greatly exceeded earlier expectations; it is over 70 percent above the harvest of last year and about 35 percent above the average production of 1932-33 to 1936-37. Al though growing conditions ih Australia have been rather unfavorable, esti mates indicate a total crop not greatly below the average harvest of the past 5 years of bushels. The first official estimate for the Union of South Africa, placed at bushels, has been exceeded only once and is about 10 percent above the average. While no estimates have been received for Chile, Uruguay, and New Zealand, variations in the crops of these countries are not likely to be marked enough to affect materially the total crop of the Southern Hemisphere. Weather conditions have been generally favorable for the seeding of winter grains in Europe, with rainfall ample and temperatures mild, ao cording to Assistant Agricultural Attache Gordon P. Boals at Berlin. In some countries local conditions delayed operations, but sowing was extended into November, and such handicaps were apparently overcome. Consequently, the total area seeded to winter wheat in European countries appears to be fully equal to, if not larger than, that of last year. Some increase is reported in France and Italy, especially in the former where rather high' monopoly prices make the growing of wheat more profitable than is true of other grains. Prospects in Spain are reported to be much better than for any other recent season, but fixed prices for wheat are rather low as com pared with free prices of other grains and tend to discourage the full re covary of 19st areas. In the United Kingdom it is thought that favorable weather and Government aid have resulted in an acreage as large as. Or larger than, that of last season. Slight declines are expected in the wheat acreages of Poland and Czechoslovakia, but no material change appears probable in the Danube Basin. Seedings in North African countries, however, may be reduced, especially in Algeria and Tunisia, if moisture conditions do not improve.
