"... The idea to produce this book originated from discussions in the IUFRO-WFSE Steering Committee (SC) meetings in Vienna (2011) and Helsinki (2012). The SC concluded that, despite the considerable attention devoted to advancing sustainable forest management (SFM), increased understanding of the aspects that foster or hinder progress towards SFM is needed. The sustainable management of natural resources, especially forests, is of vital importance to global, regional, and national efforts to achieve sustainable development and should play a key role in efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change and further low-carbon development. The goal of this book, therefore, is to increase the understanding of the conditions and combinations of conditions that foster or hinder progress towards SFM and forest-related sustainable development. The book focuses on these conditions at the local level and also includes processes and influences originating at broader national and global scales. The book is divided into four parts: Part I introduces the rationale, overall structure, and analytical framework of the book; Part II consists of 27 local- and regionallevel case studies from different parts of the world; Part III presents a synthesis of the case studies and the main findings derived from an analysis across the cases; Part IV is forward-looking and discusses several of the issues and findings from Parts II and III in the context of future outlooks and scenarios. The sexiest lowland forests in Papua Indonesia, hosting many high-valued timber species, attract the country’s authorities to allocate 94% as production forests. The main aim is to manage the forests sustainably under a concessionaire system strongly requiring sustainable-sense protocols stated in the national silviculture system-TPTI. However, in many cases, the logging activities in the tropics fail to perform sustainability in production and ecological integrity due to unavoidable high harvesting intensity adopted in uniform cutting protocols. Therefore, comprehending an intact forest’s local-specific features helps develop an adaptable silviculture technique. The book elaborates on 143 species identified in two logging concessions of Papua and explains significant differences in the distinct primary forests formed by the species. It also reveals the individuals and species of commercial timbers left after logging. Furthermore, it presentably discusses the current logging impacts potentially changing the species’ relative abundance, downgrading the future degree of tree diversity and causing a massive timber volume reduction that fizzles out to enter the third cycle. Additionally, the state-of-the-art method of relating species’ slope structure with its sapwood content of δ15N and N is conceptually explained to classify 103 species by light-requirement trait. Therefore, it is a critical indicator for species selection in the enrichment planting of pre-grown seedlings and subsequent tending. Ultimately, including a combination of species-specific minimum cutting diameter in TPTI with the consequence of enlarging the concession area becomes the ambitious goal of this work.

Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. Mountain forests and alpine ecosystems are rich in biodiversity and endemism, and they are also large global carbon stores. They are highly threatened by climate change, population growth and land use change. Mountains represent an ideal natural laboratory in which the evolution of social-ecological systems can be investigated and to the current challenges and opportunities that this past evolution has created can be assessed. Mountains have been centres of past development and conduits for the spread of crops, populations and technologies. They were and remain a locus for cultural interaction, as manifested recently in many parts of the world at the local level through pastoral-agricultural-urban interactions over access to space and resources, particularly water.
