Two studies were conducted to determine how self-forgiveness and other perpetrator reactions influence the perpetrator and the victim after a romantic relationship transgression. Study 1 used a longitudinal design to determine how guilt and shame predicted the trajectory of self-forgiveness, self-excusing, and self-punishing in participants who had recently been the perpetrator of a romantic relationship transgression. Those experiencing higher guilt at baseline had higher self-forgiveness starting out and those lower on guilt starting out had a greater change in self-forgiveness. Those experiencing more guilt at baseline experienced less change in self-forgiveness over time. Shame was not significantly related to self-forgiveness over time. Those experiencing higher shame at baseline were higher in self-excusing starting out. Those lower on shame starting out had a greater increase in self-excusing over time and those experiencing more shame at baseline experienced less increase in self-excusing over time. Guilt was not significantly related to self-excusing over time. Neither guilt nor shame predicted change in self-punishment over time. In Study 2, couples came into the lab and wrote about the same offense. One participant wrote from the perspective of the perpetrator and the other from the perspective of the victim. Victims reported their forgiveness and perception of their partners' reactions to wrongdoing. Perpetrators reported their perception of their partners' feelings of forgiveness and their feelings of self-forgiveness, self-excusing, and self-punishing. Both members reported their relationship satisfaction and commitment. Overall, self-forgiveness by the perpetrator was not a strong predictor of perpetrator satisfaction or commitment. Victims were more satisfied and committed when perceiving self-forgiveness from their partner, even though their partners' self-forgiveness did not have an effect. Self-forgiveness only positively predicted perpetrators' satisfaction and commitment when participants reported decisional self-forgiveness. Victims' perceptions of the perpetrators' self-excusing and perpetrators' self-punishing negatively predicted victim commitment and satisfaction. Victims' perceived perpetrator self-punishing positively predicted perpetrators' commitment. Perpetrator perceived victim forgiveness and victim forgiveness both positively predicted satisfaction for the perpetrator and the victim. This suggests that perpetrators' perceptions of victim forgiveness may be more important for the perpetrator than the victim actually forgiving them.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of incident recall (hurtful, kind) on forgiveness decisions in romantic relationships. Participants (N=73) were undergraduate students in a current relationship of at least one month in length, recruited through a mass email. In an online survey, participants were asked to think of a time within the past month that their partner was either kind or hurtful towards them. Next, they imagined twelve hypothetical transgressions committed by their partner. For each transgression, participants indicated the extent to which they would engage in exit, voice, loyalty, and neglect responses. Results showed that in both incident recall conditions, participants reported significantly greater voice than exit responses. In the kind condition, participants reported significantly more loyalty than neglect responses. However, this effect was not observed in the hurt condition. Therefore, when people recall a kind event, they tend to respond with both active and passive constructive responses to a hypothetical transgression. Implications and future directions for research are discussed.

Attachment injuries in romantic relationships carry the potential for several negative short- and long-term outcomes for the injured partner, the offending partner, and the relationship. Forgiveness can serve to repair the damage caused by such an injury. The concept of forgiveness, however, has predominantly only been studied as the responsibility of and of primary interest to the injured partner. There is a growing need for closer examination of what the offending partner can do to promote forgiveness. The Attachment Injury Resolution Model (AIRM) proposes eight distinct steps including actions for each partner that can lead a couple towards recovery. This study examined the actionable AIRM steps for the offending partner to draw conclusions about their association with forgiveness. These steps include empathizing, responsibility-taking, and comforting. We analyzed data collected from 18- and 19-year-old undergraduate students in committed romantic relationships who reported having experienced an attachment injury in their relationships. Regression models were conducted to investigate each of the three offender behaviors in the AIRM and each of the domains of forgiveness (avoidance, revenge-seeking, and benevolence). We found that couples in this age group displayed high rates of offender behaviors as well as high levels of forgiveness pointing to high capacity for self-repair. Findings also offered clarity on the offending partners’ role 5 towards relationship repair. Specifically, a significant association emerged between repair-oriented behaviors from the offender and the injured partner’s experience of benevolence towards them. These results have significant future clinical implications, adding to an evidence-based, attachment-informed roadmap for young couples to achieve forgiveness.

The purpose of the present study was to explore the forgiveness process that evolves between romantic partners over time by conducting a descriptive analysis to unveil injured partners' perceptions of how and why forgiveness developed within their relationship. Individuals who had previously forgiven their current romantic partner for a hurtful transgression were asked to recount the forgiveness process that transpired between themselves and their partner starting with the occurrence of a negative event. Studying these retrospective accounts allowed the researcher to reveal the conversations and critical events that laypeople attributed to the forgiveness process. In addition to verbally recalling why the levels of forgiveness changed over time between themselves and their loved one, injured partners were asked to visually depict how the forgiveness process transpired within their relationship by graphing the forgiveness trajectory that they recalled experiencing with their partner over time. As a result, specific types of forgiveness trajectories that demonstrated injured partners perceptions of how forgiveness changed over time within their relationship were revealed.
