A Heritage Not Forgotten is based on the adventurous lives of four of the author's great-grandparents who were among the first settlers in Mower County, Minnesota, in the 1850s. Adam left his family in Germany, sailed the Atlantic, worked at a lumber camp, and hopped the freight trains to arrive in Wisconsin as a farm laborer. Matilda, a teenage girl, left Hamburg with her family for a grueling journey to Wisconsin. The book includes the romantic account of Adam and Matilda's courtship and marriage in Wisconsin and their eventful journey to Minnesota by covered wagon. Phillip, a lonely, discouraged young man, left Germany and worked his way through the port in Amsterdam onto a ship bound for New York. As a lumberjack and a farm hand, he found his way to Minnesota Territory. Lucinda, as a nine-year-old girl, traveled with her family about six hundred miles by covered wagons from Ohio to Minnesota Territory. When she was sixteen, Phillip convinced Lucinda's father that she was old enough for courtship and marriage. Woven into the stories are the faith longings of these four people that drew them to transforming conversion experiences that sustained them through the hardships of pioneer life. These two couples conscripted land, raised large families, and were pillars of faith who helped establish a dynamic church in the author's hometown of Racine, Minnesota.

The opening days of World War II in the Pacific found the island of Guam in the Mariana Islands to be an isolated American possession that was nearly surrounded by Japanese territory. The island came under immediate attack with the start of hostilities. The small garrison of marines, navy personnel, and Guamanians surrendered to Japanese invaders after offering only token resistance. However, not all of the American servicemen capitulated. Navy radioman George Ray Tweed was one of six sailors who disappeared into the thick interior jungle. The Japanese occupiers quickly solidified control over the island and began a ruthless search for the missing sailors. Five of the Americans were eventually found and mercilessly killed. The sole survivor, Tweed spent the next thirty-one months on the run—sometimes literally running for his life—staying just one step ahead of his hunters. He continually eluded his pursuers through the use of his survival skills, some good luck, and the generous help of Guamanian civilians, often at great risk to their own safety. During the two and a half years the sailor remained in hiding, American forces were fighting their way across the Pacific. The events reached a crescendo in the summer of 1944 with the arrival of the American fleet in Guam. A major naval battle, an amphibious invasion, the rescue of George Tweed, and a brutal fight to liberate Guam all combine to bring this epic story to a close.

The Texas Calaboose And Other Forgotten Jails written by William E. Moore and has been published by Texas A&M University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-20 with History categories.

A calaboose is, quite simply, a tiny jail. Designed to house prisoners only for a short time, a calaboose could be anything from an iron cage to a poured concrete blockhouse. Easily constructed and more affordable for small communities than a full-sized building, calabooses once dotted the rural landscape. Though a relic of a bygone era in law enforcement and no longer in use, many calabooses remain in communities throughout Texas, often hidden in plain sight. In The Texas Calaboose and Other Forgotten Jails, William E. Moore has compiled the first guidebook to extant calabooses in Texas. He explores the history of the calaboose, including its construction, use, and eventual decline, but the heart of the book is in the alphabetically arranged photo tour of calabooses across the state. Each entry is accompanied by a vignette describing the unique features of the calaboose at hand, any infamous or otherwise memorable occupants, and the state of the calaboose at present. Most have been long abandoned, but because many remain on city or town property, some have been repurposed into storage buildings or even government offices. In certain ways, these small jails encapsulate the history of outlying communities during a time of transition from the “Wild West” to the twentieth century. Some of the structures have been preserved and cared-for, but despite the stories they can tell, many more are endangered or have already been lost. This definitive guide to tiny Texas jails serves as a record of a unique and disappearing feature of our heritage.

The early Christian church had a variety of Scriptures and other source material that informed their faith and shaped their thinking. But after a few centuries the church decided to keep the twenty-seven books of our present New Testament and to treat them as a canonical in faith and practice. But what of the other books? Many of them have survived and remain valuable for understanding the diversity of the early Christian church and the astounding claims of faith on which it was founded. Learning about these ancient documents need not threaten the church's current orthodoxy and authority; in fact, learning about these texts can help today's Christians form a deeper understanding of the early church.
