En aquest llibre s’estudia el procés de transformació de la ciutat d’Elx des de mitjan segle xviii fins a la dècada dels seixanta del segle xx. Es tracta, com es pot veure, d’un arc temporal en el qual es concentren les modificacions de fonament que jalonen la configuració progressiva de la ciutat moderna europea i en el qual se centren actualmente els esforços d’un bon nombre d’investigadors procedents de camps disciplinaris diversos, tant en el nostre context cultural i geogràfic (el País Valencià) com també en d’altres àmbits més amplis. Dins d’aquesta coincidencia general amb un important sector d’investigació, aquest llibre reuneix característiques que el fan particularment interessant. En primer lloc, l’encert en l’elecció del tema, on concorren el període històric i la ciutat on es du a terme l’estudi: un extens espai temporal en el qual naix la moderna societat en què vivim i en el qual la ciutat d’Elx i el camp circumdant s’han fos llargament segons un procés de mutacions físiques que han estat expressió de la història de la ciutat i, a través d’aquesta, del país sencer. Al llarg d’aquest període es donen cita tots els grans postulats tècnics i ideològics (els «temes» de la transformació urbana del segle XIX i principi del XX) que s’entrecreuen amb els canvis reals que s’han operat en la forma urbana i amb els «episodis» que han donat una forma precisa a les formulacions ideològiques de la urbanització. De manera complementària, la transformació específica d’Elx permet establir una concreta periodització que ha donat llum tant sobre les modalitats que ha adoptat al País Valencià la transformació de ciutats de grandària mitjana (suport de la nostra xarxa de ciutats) com sobre la fortuna i la consistencia de la tradició «tècnica» en matèria de projectar i controlar aquesta transformació. Una altra característica és l’enfocament decididament bolcat envers la individuació d’un punt de vista disciplinari específic, el qual, sense renunciar a fer ús de la historiografia convencional, troba en la naturalesa material del fabricat urbà la veritable clau interpretativa del procés: es tracta d’interpretar les mutacions a partir de la seua forma concreta, ço és, a partir de la seua vinculació amb una determinada pràctica (l’arquitectura, la construcció, la fabricació edilícia).

Barcelona y Milán, a pesar de ser dos ciudades muy diferentes respecto a la morfología y a la historia urbana (además, obviamente, de la diferente situación social y política que vivieron sus habitantes entre 1945 y 1977), presentan en gran parte del novecientos características tipológicas convergentes que se pueden reconocer con facilidad, especialmente por lo que se refiere a muchas piezas arquitectónicas de la modernidad construidas a partir de los primeros años cincuenta, cuando los arquitectos más significativos de ambas ciudades entraron en un contacto amistoso y profesional intenso y continuado que se prolongó, con la incorporación de actores diferentes, hasta final del siglo XX. Pero los edificios que proyectaron estos arquitectos muestran afinidades más complejas y profundas de las que se podría pensar que se derivan de un simple cambio de ideas entre profesionales y tienen que ver con aspectos comunes del genius loci de ambas ciudades y con estrategias de difusión de los principios proyectuales. La interrelación entre ambas ciudades era, por una parte, una forma de escapar del sofocante control de la dictadura franquista, pero, por otra, era una forma de difundir la concepción de la modernidad de la Escuela de Milán, alejada del mito de la tecnología y cercana a la valoración del contexto urbano y a una visión crítica de la historia. Pero esta conexión no solo fue en un sentido, ya que, si Milán influyó en Barcelona, también Barcelona influyó en Milán, y no únicamente en términos urbanos y arquitectónicos, sino también políticos, económicos y sociales.
