Este livro tem como questão central a compreensão da maneira que se efetivaram as políticas de educação operadas pelos diferentes grupos oligárquicos fluminenses ao longo da Primeira República, e quais impactos representaram no cotidiano escolar, tomando o município de Campos como posição de análise. Assim, o principal objetivo do livro é contribuir para a redução do silêncio existente em relação à escolarização primária no interior do estado do Rio de Janeiro, sobretudo na região Norte Fluminense. Outro objetivo é mapear a atuação das escolas públicas e privadas de Campos num contexto de transformações socioespaciais que marcaram o período da Primeira República, identificando o lugar da escola na cidade. O trabalho também procura identificar no processo de escolarização primária em Campos os reflexos do pensamento político fluminense, marcado pelo conservadorismo agrarista. Por fim, busca-se fornecer subsídios para que as escolas criadas naquele período e ainda existentes conheçam melhor sua história e o contexto em que foram criadas, se possível colaborando para a organização de seus arquivos escolares e centros de memória. A obra está estruturada em cinco capítulos que buscam articular as características políticas da Primeira República, o lugar ocupado pela educação primária nos projetos republicanos de sociedade e as experiências de escolarização primária vivenciadas no município de Campos dos Goytacazes na virada do século XIX para o século XX.

This is a detailed study of British influence in Brazil as a theme within the larger story of modernization. The British were involved at key points in the initial stages of modernization. Their hold upon the import-export economy tended to slow down industrialization, and there were other areas in which their presence acted as a brake upon Brazilian modernization. But the British also fostered change. British railways provided primary stimulus to the growth of coffee exports, and since the British did not monopolize coffee production, a large proportion of the profits remained in Brazilian hands for other uses. Furthermore, the burgeoning coffee economy shattered traditional economic, social and political relationships, opening up the way for other areas of growth. The British role was not confined to economic development. They also contributed to the growth of 'a modern world-view'. Spencerianism and the idea of progress, for instance, were not exotic and meaningless imports, but an integral part of the transformation Brazil was experiencing.
