Aldo van Eyck sofferma il suo lavoro sulla ricerca dei caratteri costanti dell’architettura per ritrovare nelle forme arcaiche un principio per il progetto del nuovo. I suoi disegni sono un’impronta, un calco, un segno inciso capace di evocare e re-interpretare forme antiche per esigenze moderne | Aldo van Eyck searched for the permanent traits of architecture to find in archaic forms the principle with which to design new architectures. Drawing is the logical consequence of the architect’s lifelong search for the eternal and essential. He almost always drew layouts because it was on these plans that he based the conception of the whole building; in fact he acknowledged that they are at the origin of his designs. The search for the original matrix in a design and its representation involves repeating simple aggregative laws of form referring to figurative imagery. His drawings are a footprint, a mould, an engraved sign capable of evoking and re-interpreting ancient forms for modern needs.

Poco prima del bicentenario della morte di Piranesi alcuni ricercatori hanno ripreso le sue controverse posizioni e hanno riproposto una figura che il rigido neoclassicismo filoellenico era riuscito a eclissare, restituendo prestigio al suo lavoro all’interno del dibattito sull’architettura moderna. Ma più che i suoi testi, quello che ha contribuito a rilanciare il dibattito e a riportare l’attenzione sul suo lavoro è il suo impiego del disegno come mezzo per ottenere una rappresentazione fedele dei resti archeologici, come elemento per un’interpretazione critica dell’architettura della Roma antica, come strumento di ideazione architettonica o, ancora, di trascrizione della fantasia: insomma, come strumento per la comunicazione visiva. Nell’ambito della descrizione dello spazio in termini pittorici, il suo lavoro grafico ha contribuito a imporre il concetto di spazio architettonico come soggetto pittorico a sé stante, rivoluzionando il discorso intorno alla prospettiva e la tecnica dell’incisione. Le sue ben note Carceri inaugurano un racconto grafico architettonico che stabilisce il valore assoluto dello spazio come protagonista dell’architettura stessa, mettendo in discussione, con questo discorso, i fondamenti architettonici del classicismo, basati su ordine, simmetria e regolarità | Shortly before the 200th anniversary of Piranesi’s death several researchers studied his controversial positions and proposed a portrait of Piranesi which rigid pro-Hellenic neo-classicism had managed to eclipse; their endeavour returned his works to their rightful place within the framework of the debate on modern architecture. However, it was not his writings that revived the debate and focused people’s attention on his works; no, it was Piranesi’s use of drawing as a way to faithfully represent archaeological ruins, as a way to critically interpret ancient Roman architecture, and as a tool to design architecture or even transpose imaginary ideas. In short, drawing as a visual communication tool. As regards the pictorial description of space, Piranesi’s drawings helped to impose the concept of architectural space as a pictorial subject in itself and also revolutionised the debate on perspective and etching techniques. His famous Prisons inaugurated a novel on architectural graphics; they established the absolute value of space as the protagonist of architecture itself and questioned the fundamental architectural rules applied by classicism based on order, symmetry and regularity.
