Cette thèse est le fruit d'une ethnographie de plusieurs années auprès des habitants du quartier de La Source à Orléans. Ancien espace boisé de 700 hectares à l'orée de la Sologne, La Source devient un quartier administratif de la commune d'Orléans en 1959. Aujourd'hui, un sixième de la population orléanaise réside sur ce territoire (sans compter la population étudiante) soit près de vingt mille habitants. L'histoire tant démographique qu'urbanistique de ce quartier, comparable à celle des villes nouvelles, a fortement clivé les modes d'habiter, et marqué les formes d'appropriation des espaces publics. L'observation des pratiques quotidiennes et ordinaires des habitants dans divers lieux et moments de sociabilité ainsi que l'analyse de documents d'archive et la réalisation d'entretiens sont les données empiriques à partir desquelles je me suis intéressé aux formes d'engagement polymorphes des habitants de ce territoire.Cette méthode d'enquête, immersive et participative, m'a permis de saisir les formes d'une vie politique locale par le biais des actions et des discours « ordinaires » de ses habitants, plutôt que par une conception doxique, institutionnelle, du politique. Je soutiens dans ce travail que les manières d'habiter un territoire façonnent ses espaces publics, c'est-à-dire les espaces physiques dans lesquels les habitants construisent un monde commun avec un groupe de pairs. Or l'espace public n'est pas univoque, celui de l'un n'est pas nécessairement partagé et appréhendé comme tel par un autre.De l'observation de ces dynamiques sociales et politiques, émergent ainsi plusieurs types d'espaces publics, définis par leur accessibilité physique et symbolique, qui peuvent être divisés en trois catégories poreuses entre elles, et mouvantes dans le temps : un espace public du politique institutionnalisé, un espace public majoritaire et un espace public minoritaire, lesquels façonnent autant qu'ils sont façonnés par des processus de citoyenneté. En effet, c'est précisément au moment où les habitants mettent à l'épreuve leurs capacités d'agir, liées à la capacité d'influencer une transaction sociale dans un espace public que se façonnent tout à la fois des formes d'engagement et des processus de citoyenneté.Ce travail repose sur l'analyse de quatre milieux, perméables entre eux : la mise en œuvre par des élus et des salariés de collectivités territoriales d'une politique de la ville, le Grand Projet de ville, dans le quartier de La Source ; les modalités et formes d'engagement de militants de l'une des plus vieilles associations du quartier, l'Association des Habitants de La Source ; les formes d'engagement de clients-habitués d'un lieu de restauration situé dans un territoire décrié du quartier de La Source ; et enfin, les arrangements et les disputes d'habitants impliqués dans la conception d'un jardin partagé.

Gated communities are a new "hot button" in many North American cities. From Boston to Los Angeles and from Miami to Toronto citizens are taking sides in the debate over whether any neighborhood should be walled and gated, preventing intrusion or inspection by outsiders. This debate has intensified since the hard cover edition of this book was published in 1997. Since then the number of gated communities has risen dramatically. In fact, new homes in over 40 percent of planned developments are gated n the West, the South, and southeastern parts of the United States. Opposition to this phenomenon is growing too. In the small and relatively homogenous town of Worcester, Massachusetts, a band of college students from Brown University and the University of Chicago picketed the Wexford Village in November of 1998 waving placards that read "Gates Divide." These students are symbolic of a much larger wave of citizens asking questions about the need for and the social values of gates that divide one portion of a community from another.
