Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: Theodore Dreiser's "An American Tragedy" was published in 1925 and is today considered as one of his most important works. It is a powerful novel that deals with the struggles of protagonist Clyde Griffiths, a young man who tries to move up in society in order to escape the miserable life his parents lead due to their mission work. However, he is finally sentenced to death for the murder of Roberta Alden, his pregnant lover, of whom he has been trying to rid himself while maintaining a relationship with the socially prestigious Sondra Finchley. Therefore, "An American Tragedy" is mainly concerned with the social hierarchy in the America of the 1920s as well as the murder trial of a young man suffering from the constraints of society. These main topics are also the predominant aspects when analyzing the forms and functions of American English in the novel. Thus, I have chosen to put the main emphasis of my paper on them. Additionally, I will take a closer look at French influences and Dreiser's personal style in "An American Tragedy". For the sake of comprehensibility, I will start with a theoretical approach of American English and then continue with an analysis of the forms and functions as they appear in the novel.

Ambitious, but ill-educated, naïve, and immature, Clyde Griffiths is raised by poor and devoutly religious parents to help in their street missionary work. As a young adult, Clyde must, to help support his family, take menial jobs as a soda jerk, then a bellhop at a prestigious Kansas City hotel. There, his more sophisticated colleagues introduce him to bouts of social drinking and sex with prostitutes. Enjoying his new lifestyle, Clyde becomes infatuated with manipulative Hortense Briggs, who takes advantage of him. After being in a car accident in which a young girl loses her life, Clyde is forced to run away from the town in search for the new life.

Theodore Dreiser is indisputably one of America's most important twentieth-century novelists. An American Tragedy, Sister Carrie, and Jennie Gerhardt have all made an indelible mark on the American literary landscape. And yet, remarkably few critical books and no recent collections of critical essays have been published that attempt to answer current theoretical questions about Dreiser's entire canon. This collection is the first to appear in twenty-four years. The ten contributing essayists offer original interpretations of Dreiser's works from such disparate points of view as new historicism, poststructuralism, psychoanalysis, feminism, film studies, and canon formation. A vital reassessment, Theodore Dreiser: Beyond Naturalism brings this influential modern writer into the 1990s by viewing him through the lens of the latest literary theory and cultural criticism.

This book's premise is that a novel's ideas about the human drama are not necessarily the same as those its author consciously holds - meaning that a close reading of Theodore Dreiser's artistic portrayal of modern America in An American Tragedy reveals the idea that he transcends the empirical premises of his presumed naturalistic thought to affirm the reality of the self and the importance of selfhood. Based on this crucial premise and intensive analysis of the novel's text, Professor Orlov's study develops an argument offering many original views of the Tragedy's meanings and artistry. There is new light here on the fact that Dreiser sees the subversion of the idea of self in a highly materialistic society as the heart of his characters' tragic experiences. Ultimately, then, this study suggests that An American Tragedy is an antinaturalistic statement about the self's intrinsic importance.

This collection brings together the work of critics who approach Dreiser from psychoanalytical, feminist, new historicist, culturalist, and comparatist perspectives. Based on the works of the Pennsylvania Edition, several of the essays examine old, neglected, or unpublished texts, and explore questions of intertextuality and interauthority that recent reading has brought to light. A central concern of this volume is the intertextual and literary relationships between Dreiser and key American writers in modern times, such as Stephen Crane, Frankl Norris, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James T. Farrell, and Richard Wright.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, course: Proseminar, language: English, abstract: Theodore Dreiser published his first novel, Sister Carrie, in 1900. His most famous work, An American Tragedy, was printed in 1925. Reading criticism on Theodore Dreiser’s novels, one can get the impression that Dreiser’s style is atrocious and chaotic. “It is questionable whether he ever wrote a single sentence capable of giving pleasure to itself” (qtd. in Allen 81). Stoll quotes critics that maintain that Theodore Dreiser was never able to obtain a technique of narrative writing. They argue that his writings are poor or that he writes without structure and that his style influences his novels’ quality in a bad way (cf. Stoll 4-12). “Dreiser’s writing inevitably suffered from his poor taste, inadequate attention to the niceties of diction and an ear insufficiently attuned to style and tone” (qtd. in Flanagan 289). However, these critics are not completely true. The following paper will show that Dreiser’s writing is not entirely bad and that his diction was not completely arbitrary. Therefore, the novels Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy will be analyzed with respect to imagery, symbolism, and some rhetorical devices.
