Alternative Forms Of Knowing In Mathematics written by Swapna Mukhopadhyay and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-28 with Education categories.

This book grew out of a public lecture series, Alternative forms of knowledge construction in mathematics, conceived and organized by the first editor, and held annually at Portland State University from 2006. Starting from the position that mathematics is a human construction, implying that it cannot be separated from its historical, cultural, social, and political contexts, the purpose of these lectures was to provide a public intellectual space to interrogate conceptions of mathematics and mathematics education, particularly by looking at mathematical practices that are not considered relevant to mainstream mathematics education. One of the main thrusts was to contemplate the fundamental question of whose mathematics is to be valorized in a multicultural world, a world in which, as Paolo Freire said, “The intellectual activity of those without power is always characterized asnon-intellectual”. To date, nineteen scholars (including the second editor) have participated in the series. All of the lectures have been streamed for global dissemination at:http://www.media.pdx.edu/dlcmedia/events/AFK/. Most of the speakers contributed a chapter to this book, based either on their original talk or on a related topic. The book is divided into four sections dealing with: • Mathematics and the politics of knowledge • Ethnomathematics • Learning to see mathematically • Mathematics education for social justice.

The Symbolic Forms has long been considered the greatest of Cassirer's works. Into it he poured all the resources of his vast learning about language and myth, religion, art, and science--the various creative symbolizing activities and constructions through which man has expressed himself and given intelligible objective form to this experience. "These three volumes alone (apart from Cassirer's other papers and books) make an outstanding contribution to epistemology and to the human power of abstraction. It is rather as if 'The Golden Bough' had been written in philosophical rather than in historical terms."--F.I.G. Rawlins, Nature

The creative world of a northern Native community is revealed in this innovative book. Once semi-nomadic hunters and gatherers, the Dene Tha of northern Canada today live in government-built homes in the settlement of Chateh. Their lives are a distinct blend of old and new, in which more traditional forms of social control, healing, and praying entwine with services supplied by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a nursing station, and a Roman Catholic church. Many older cultural beliefs and practices remain: ghosts still linger, reincarnating and sometimes stealing children's souls; dreams and visions are powerful shapers of actions; and personal visions and experiences are considered the sources of true knowledge.

The Routledge Handbook Of Epistemic Injustice written by Ian James Kidd and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-31 with Philosophy categories.

Epistemic injustice is one of the most important and ground-breaking subjects to have emerged in philosophy in recent years. By examining the way injustice can occur to individuals when they are undermined or not 'heard' on account of their gender, race or age (as in To Kill a Mockingbird), and the injustices that can occur to individuals or groups because a society lacks an entire concept, such as sexual harassment, epistemic injustice draws attention to the fundamental links between knowledge, ethics and power. The Routledge Handbook of Epistemic Injustice is an outstanding reference source to the key topics, problems and debates in this exciting subject and is the first collection of its kind. Comprising over thirty chapters by a team of international contributors the Handbook is divided into five clear parts: Core Concepts; Liberatory Epistemologies and Axes of Oppression; Schools of Thought and Subfields within Epistemology; Socio-political, Ethical, and Psychological Dimensions of Knowing; Case Studies of Epistemic Injustice. As well as fundamental topics such as testimonial and hermeneutic injustice and virtue epistemology, the Handbook includes chapters on important issues such as moral imagination, objectivity and objectification, implicit bias, gender and race. Also included are chapters on areas in applied ethics and philosophy, such as media ethics, education and health care.

"Cassirer employs his remarkable gift of lucidity to explain the major ideas and intellectual issues that emerged in the course of nineteenth century scientific and historical thinking. The translators have done an excellent job in reproducing his clarity in English. There is no better place for an intelligent reader to find out, with a minimum of technical language, what was really happening during the great intellectual movement between the age of Newton and our own."-- New York Times. -- Publisher description.

Longstanding cultural heritages about the nature of knowledge continue to dominate Western education. Yet the ways of knowing represented through teaching and workplace practices, including assessment, and their relationship to views of learning, are often ignored in debates about learning. This book provides a rich collection of readings that challenge traditional understandings of knowledge and the view of mind that underpins them. It offers socioculturally informed alternatives and tools for innovating change and transforming practice that value different ways of knowing, embracing those that learners bring to educational and workplace settings. The book takes forward thinking about curriculum in a number of unique and important ways. It adopts a relational view of learning and knowledge, covers educational and workplace learning, and examines knowledge from a sociocultural perspective where learner identities are conceived as forms of competency or knoweldge. It presents challenging ways of thinking about knowledge and learning and considers how to enact these in practice. Drawing from the international literature, this book will be essential reading for students of curriculum, learning and assessment in all sectors from primary to further and higher education. It is suitable as a core text for masters and taught doctorate programmes. It will also be of interest to a wide range of professionals involved with the processes of curriculum, learning and the practice of teaching and assessment. It will be relevant to those in work-based and professional education and training and informal educationsl settings, as well as traditional educational institutions at all levels. A unique collection in a field that is underrepresented, it will also be of interest to an academic audience.

Action Research written by Jean McNiff and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-22 with Education categories.

Since the first edition of this established text was published in 1988, action research has gained ground as a popular method amongst educational researchers, and in particular for practising teachers doing higher-level courses. In this new edition Jean McNiff provides updates on methodological discussions and includes new sections of case study material and information on supporting action research. The book raises issues about how action research is theorised, whether it is seen as a spectator discipline or as a real life practice, and how practitioners position themselves within the debate. It discusses the importance for educators of understanding their own work and showing how their educative influence can lead to the development of good orders in formal and informal learning settings and in the wider community. This second edition comes at a time when, after years of debate over what counts as action research, it is now considered an acceptable and useful part of mainstream research practice.
