In Forty Poems for Forty Years, you will find words forged in the desert of the author's own rebellion, disillusionment, and despair--words that echo the lessons that only suffering can teach. Whether you find yourself in the desert of desolation or in the springs of renewal, may these words encourage you to persevere in the former and to rejoice in the latter, knowing that each day brings you that much closer to home.

This book of poems began forty years ago when our family moved from Evansville, Indiana, to Hillsborough, North Carolina, a small town near Durham and Chapel Hill. We moved into a large house on a ninety-acre farm. Our family consisted of my wife, Adrian, and our three sons, Jo (age eleven) and identical twins, Mike and Dan (age eight). On Christmas Eve 1975, I thought of a poem to write to my wife, Adrian. I put it in the tree that evening, and she found it Christmas morning. She was so fond of it that she asked that I write her a poem each Christmas. So for the next forty-plus years, with only few exceptions, I wrote a Christmas Eve poem each year. The subject matter varied but was always tied in to our family and Adrian. Since we lived on a farm, we tried farming for the years the sons were at home. We tried raising cattle, and one of my favorite monikers for Adrian, Mrs. Moo, was derived from it. She was always hopping around very busily, and that is why I also refer to her as Toad. Jo married and had three children: Caleb, Megan, and Jacob. He was later divorced but remarried to Kelli. Mike married Sonya, and they have three children: Michael, Elizabeth, and Richard. Dan married Kimmie, and they have two children: Sarah and Kenneth. To me, the most amazing thing about these poems is that on every single occasion, without exception, I thought of the poem on Christmas Eve, not a minute before. It became very stressful as each Christmas approached, since I had not a clue of what I was going to write. So many times I thought I was going to have to say that I simply could not think of anything, but each Christmas Eve, something would come to me.

Forty Five written by Frieda Hughes and has been published by Harper this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-28 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The daughter of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes looks back on forty-five years of loves, losses, pain, hope and joy in this revealing poetry collection. Breaking forty-five years of near-silence on the subject of her life, Frieda Hughes finally opens up through the medium she knows best -- poetry. In this extraordinary collection of personal poems, she takes the reader step-by-step through the difficult and inspirational events that defined each year of her life, and which she encapsulates here. We share her pain through her mother's suicide, her fight against bulimia, three marriages, losing her father to cancer, and an apparently insurmountable breakdown in the relationship with her stepmother. In the face of so much grief, she also shared her successes, her love, and her ultimate triumphs as an accomplished poet and painter. As she grows older, her narrative unfolds to show a complex life beautifully rendered in her poetry. Hughes is a master of powerful, moving, and vivid language, as seen with the critical success of her past collections, Wooroloo and Waxworks, and never more so than now, as she takes on the topics of life, love, loss, and family. For any love of poetry or for anyone who wants to know what happened in the life of Frieda Hughes after she so tragically lost her mother, this book is the answer.
