Excerpt from Forty Years in Brazil In preparing this little book on Brazil, I have been actuated chiefly by the desire to help to make known a country which is still, so to speak, terra incognita to Europeans generally, and one which I venture to say will repay them to make a closer study of. It is not possible, in a work of so cursory and slight a character, to do more than lightly touch upon the many points of varied interest which a country such as Brazil offers to the minds of thoughtful persons. I have, therefore, merely endeavoured to say a few words about the country in which so many of the best years of my life have been spent, because I find that the few ideas people do possess about it on this side of the Atlantic are, generally speaking, very fragmentary and often entirely erroneous. I have confined myself principally to speaking of those States of which I have personal knowledge, although there are many more, both in the north and in the interior of Brazil, which offer an equally interesting field for study. Excerpt from A Year in Brazil: With Notes on the Abolition of Slavery, the Finances of the Empire, Religion, Meteorology, Natural History, Etc IN offering this book as a slight contribution to the biblio graphy of Brazil I must claim indulgence for many short comings. It is merely intended as a sketch but, in addition to the journal, which is almost entirely formed of letters written home, I have added short notes on various subjects, which I hope may be of interest to many different classes of readers. Excerpt from In a Changing Brazil This mutual lack of knowledge and, it must be admitted, mutual apathy toward such knowledge, resulted from factors I try to make plain in this book. If the Brazilians, certain of the superiority of their achievements, found it unnecessary to investigate and comprehend ours and the motivations for them, no less were we indifferent to theirs, and for the same reason. Excerpt from Ninety Days in the Tropics, or Letters From Brazil As many are doubtless unfamiliar with the route pur sued ih a trip from New York to Brazil, it may be well to note that the most direct course is by the vessels of the United States and Brazil Mail Steamship Company. Excerpt from Brazil Today and Tomorrow Everything that has been done to bring Brazil into the race of nations is the work of the last hundred years; the most intense period of rapid building since the establishment of the republic has lasted less than thirty years, for in that time has taken place the great acquisition of private fortunes in the industrial regions of Brazil. Much of the civic building, creation of pub lic utilities, establishment of transportation lines, has been due to foreign capital and technical skill, but Brazil herself has contributed no small share of enter prise during the last fifty years; descendants of Portu guese fidalgo: have taken up engineering, agriculture, commerce and city-making with energy and intelligence which is not always given a due share of recognition by those onlookers who think that all development of Latin America must come from without. In Brazil much progress, much creation, has come from within, and will come to an even larger degree in the future with improvement in technical education; but the country is enormous, the centres of population have always lain on or near the sea border, and interior Brazil, the virgin heart of South America, remains practically untouched. The two great interior states of Matto Grosso and Goyaz cover an area of more than two million square kilometres; they make up one-fourth of the whole Brazilian territory, and Brazil covers half of South America: but this huge heart-shaped wedge in the cen tre of the continent has no more than half a million population. This is not because the country is tropical or worthless, but because it is unopened and unknown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Adventures With the Bible in Brazil Brazil is the second largest country and the fourth largest empire of the World, and has a white population greater than those of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and British Africa together. It was discovered in 1500 by the Portuguese, whose descendants hold it intact to-day, the Dutch and French invasions proving but temporary episodes in the otherwise peaceful history of this splendid Country. The great, and indeed it may be said the only, historian of Brazil is the English poet, Robert Southey, whose masterpiece, The History of Brazil, should be read by all who are interested in The Land of the Southern Cross. Brazil occupies about half the area and has about half the population of the whole continent, so that Spanish South America is a misnomer. It was governed from Lisbon until 1822, when Brazil declared her independence, and chose as her ruler a Portuguese prince, whose son, Dom Pedro II, succeeded him, and governed the country wisely and well for about fifty years. In 1889 a military revolution, overawing the population on the one hand, and making extravagant and illusory promises on the other, succeeded in driving the aged Dom Pedro from his throne and country; and a Republic was set up, which is the established form of government until this day. Though the early years of the Republic were lean ones and full of disillusionments, the country of late has greatly advanced in general progress and wealth, and enjoys a fairly stable form of government.
